The SC only has a single pump in the tank, nothing in the engine bay if I remember correctly. So maybe the relay you think is fuel, isn't.

I'm looking through my version of the workshop manual and can't find anything that could make the noise you are talking about linked to Relay 5 that is part of the fuel system. Unless there is some weird echoing going on, there doesn't seem to be anything there.

Sound like the electric water pump which is located there. I have a used fuel pump from my SC in the garage, I could check which of the terminals go to the pump if that would help? |

Last thing i tried, with relay exposed and fuel tank sender pipe disconnected, gave the car a swing, did not see the relay close, nor any fuel spew out the sender unit.

May be too late for you, but I've checked and it's the middle two of the 6 pins which feed the pump. The two on either side of the terminal go to the two level sensors. |

Only just read this post, I know this is a bit late but might help in the future. A mechanic friend showed me this trick if you want to hear something buried in the car. Find a clean bit of hose, stick one end in your ear and place

Just had a mail from the dealer, apparently the fuel tank was full of gunk, which blocked the infeed (suction) line and the pump.
