Tailgate and console struts

I replaced the upper tailgate struts last night using genuine parts. It's improved lift. However, I expected the new struts to lift the upper tailgate as soon as the open switch was triggered. It currently needs to be lifted the first 20-30cm then it lifts. Is that normal or have I scored old stock from JLR that's degassed sitting on the shelf?

As an aside it was a very easy job.

I also replaced the bottom lid strut on the centre console, which took a lot longer. I didn't think there was another strut for the upper lid. Are they the same part number?

The price of the above struts from the Australian dealer wasn't too bad. It was a cheaper on eBay but not a heap cheaper.

I think that L/R would get a few complaints if the tailgate opened it's self.... especially if your stood next to it Shocked

I replaced the struts on my Merc ML, they are after market.... think that they might have over done the lift.. if you aren't quick enough it gets you in the plums Shocked Big Cry Censored Need less to say I'm very good at the quick step now Laughing Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... I have used struts from the ebay seller gasstrutguys for several cars and will use them again. Always less than $30 shipped a pair. (15 Pounds) I did my L322 and can report that after pressing the release on the remote the tailgate lifts a few mm to clear the catch and then with minimum effort from me to start it moving up after about 150mm the struts take over and the tailgate lifts itself till fully open. A bargain. 2007 TDV8 VSE

I don't know if it is possible to fit longer struts - I keep bashing my head on the tailgate. Ron B. VK2OTC

Ron you must be quite tall. I've adjusted the normal height of my RRV with the IID tool so it's 20mm lower. There is 185cm of clearance under my open upper tailgate. The struts at full extension are 52cm. ______________________________

There must be something in the air at the mo, just lifted the bonnet to refill the screen washer reservoir and the airsprings were no longer up to the task of holding it up Evil or Very Mad Quick look on Ebay and gasstrutguys has a pair for A$27.50 shipped. Smile

Do you leave the car in low mode / height.... cos I'm in danger of bashing me brains in when the car's in low Shocked Thumbs Up Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

I don't normally leave the car in access mode but I have been lately whilst I'm fitting my camping drawers and fridge.

I must remember to measure the extended strut length. Ron B. VK2OTC
