Heavy(ish) seering ( Fixed)

My steering went heavy last week not like there was no assistance but low speed maneuvers are just a bit too much work I checked the codes and got a short circuit on the Servotronic valve so I changed that but no difference , did a bit of searching and found a reference to the BCU being the culprit . So does anyone have some experience on this ? and where is it ?very grateful for any input Thumbs Up

Looking at the workshop manual it says the servotronic valve is operated by the GEM , is this the same as the BCM? or something else . 2008 MY Supercharged

Yes I had this exact same issue with the same fault short circuit fault code. After replacing the servotronic valve which didn't improve the situation I bought a new BCM from Dan and after programming it to my car my issue was sorted. I would put my money on that your BCM module is faulty. If you search the BWM forums it's a common issue with the BCM.

Thanks Matt it was your post that put me on to the BCM issue ,don't suppose you could tell me where it BCU is and can it be programed with an iiD bt ?

Here is the code and as you can see it is both a short and open circuit at the same time Question Laughing

The BCM module is located under the passenger seat, not sure on the iiD tool as I used my faultmate to code mine. If your BCM is original then it will more than likely be the Version 4 and a new one you buy will be Version 10, same units just the version 10 is the latest edition with slightly more options for the later vehicles but both are compatiable. The only thing you can't to is export the config of the V4 and import it to the V10 I just printed my old config out and manually entered it into the new module and hey presto it sorted everything out. One thing the V10 did show up which the V4 didn't is it complained about a short circuit on my washer pump system, still works but doesn't continually pump fluid you have to press the stalk a few times to get enough fluid on the screen which I have yet to sort out in the warmer weather.

I shall be following this thread with interest Thumbs Up , as I too have intermittent heaviness in the power steering, plus intermittent weird behaviour on rear door unlocking, all of which seems to be down to a faulty BCM.
I haven’t (yet) bought a new BCM because of the need to re-program the new unit. This can’t be done with the IID tool, GAP have told me. I know Matt Bow down used a Faultmate. I would have to go to a Stealer or specialist to have it done, and there are none around here I would want to use! Big Cry
So, axle, please keep us informed of progress ...
Thanks … and good luck. It's "bébéchoon", ackcherly, with accents. 'Steve' to my chums.

All fixed

So Body Processor Module arrived on Friday and GAP side they would give me the firmware update when they returned to work Monday , come Monday I tell Gap its an L322 because I had forgotten to mention it "ah " they say not a D3? give us a day and we will write the software and today I downloaded it, Wow as always amazing service from Gap.

Anyhoo , fit new BPM reconnect battery and update module with original setting . Five minutes and done steering back to feather light , had to resync my central locking for some reason but no biggie it took longer to get other key out of the safe than fix it . 2008 MY Supercharged

Just a thought but at the moment this might be a service only available to beta users with a BT iiD at the moment, I had to download firmwear with s unique build number and I think a lot of functions are about to come on stream for the production soft wear . But since most iiD users on this site are beta users it shouldn't be a problem . 2008 MY Supercharged

Excellent, well done, axel!
And thanks for the P.S. you added as I had a couple of questions I was going to ask, not having seen any BCM-specific firmware build number or module when I connected my IID Tool to the IID Tool updater just now (I’m assuming that’s the procedure).
But my IID Tool is the non-BT version and I am not a Beta user so I guess I’ll have to wait Big Cry

However, could I ask how you “update module with original setting”? Where/how did you get the original settings? Is it simply a matter of writing down all the existing BCM module settings in the CCF files and then manually inputting those original settings into the new module, or is it something else? Do any other CCF settings have to be changed?
I’m sure this info will be useful for anyone else having to change their BCM module in the future, so thanks in advance and sorry for pestering you after your success story! Thumbs Up It's "bébéchoon", ackcherly, with accents. 'Steve' to my chums.

The process is as follows;
-Connect the IIDTool to your computer USB port
-Start the updater software
-Click “Find Device”
-Select Special Build 2340
-Click on “Program Firmware”
-Wait until completion
-Update the mobile devices files (explained at the end of the process, if using an IIDTool BT

In your vehicle, in this order:
Service/Test -> BPM-Body Processor -> Renew ECU
Save Restore -> Restore Settings -> Car Config (this will apply previous settings modifications you've made)

and that was it , I had to turn a few things on that I have changed since I saved my settings but it was just alarm chirps and lazy lock stuff.

One thing I have noticed is apart from the steering being lighter than I remember (durhh) is that I always had a slight wobble through the wheel despite attempts to balance it out , well it's gone . This is only speculative but I think a failing valve will take the BPM with it eventually . Anyway I hope this had been useful to people now and in the future . Thumbs Up 2008 MY Supercharged

That's great, axel, thanks.

I just have to wait now until GAP make the update available generally ...

I think I'll contact them to see if they can say when this will be.

Thanks once again axel. It's "bébéchoon", ackcherly, with accents. 'Steve' to my chums.
