Hello All,
I'm hoping someone out there can pinpoint a bizarre fault I've recently acquired. I've had my L322 for about 3 months with various electrical mechanical issues. I love the car so I'm prepared to work through the issues, gearbox, sensors, fuel pump, electrical gremlins etc etc etc.
On the last 'issue' we had low fuel pressure that was sending car into limp mode and tripping the 'low fuel pressure sensor' so a new external pump fitted. All went well for a couple of days the same again. Took pump off and tested it, all was good.
The tank pump wasn't delivering the fuel to the main external pump. So new pump ordered and out came the sender unit and the saddle tank inspection lid. To my horror the tank bottom and sender was clogged up in what I can only describe as 'liver'!
Big blobs of it swilling about in the bottom of the tank.
Anyway, tank drained and all pipes and sender unit thoroughly flushed clean. I reinstalled the sender, flushed all the pipes through fitted a new fuel filter and whacked a load of injector cleaner in.
Now.....this is where my new problem rears its ugly head! Started car and let it tick over for about 40 minutes, before deciding to take it for a run. All went well with no issue. Car pulled well and seemed to be back as she was. Next day started it and notice a large puff of whitey blue smoke blew out.....I revved car and it was gone. 100 yards down the road I looked like a Red Arrow with plumes of whitey blue smoke filling the road. It was that bad I couldn't see the car behind me! Now I pulled over called a friend who suggested pulling the boost vacuum pipe off the valve so as the car ran as a normally aspirated engine....in case the turbo had blown. Good idea I thought. So pulled it off smoke still there but not as thick! So immediately thought turbo was at fault? Next day, started it up....No smoke at all. Thought I'll reconnect the vacuum pipe and give it a run. Same again smokey as hell. So decided to run it about to see if it cleared itself. Hey presto....5 minutes No smoke at all. Stopped revved knackers off it....no smoke! Feeling please drove home pulled into the drive and made a phone call to a mate telling him the smoke had gone. Whilst on the phone (car was still running in drive on tick over) revved it up again.....Smokey Joe was back!
I turned engine off went inside to grab a cup of tea, lifted bonnet and started car up again.....Smoke Gone!!
So what I seem to be having is an intermittent smokey engine....and nobody at our local garages , including LandRover specialist seems to have any idea why?

The 'liver' you describe sounds like it can be from a type of fungus that grows in Diesel (heating oil and parafin too).

A previous employer had a problem with the on site DERV tanks, had to get them drained and all the systems cleaned. The trucks had to have their fuel systems cleaned. Trouble is it can get into the injectors etc.

I wonder also if the injector cleaner has removed the gunge from around the seals and they are now leaking.

Also check your oil level to see if there is diesel leaking past the seals. Check the oil for diesel. John

has the breather on the engine been changed, when they block it causes oil to be forced by the seals causing smoke, if it hasnt get the new vortex type.

A quick way to see if the engine is breathing ok, filter not blocked. With the engine running, remove the oil filler cap. There should be little to no back pressure. You may have a little smoke, but not too much. When the filter is blocked bad you will hear a hiss as you remove the oil filler cap. Seek help immediately if this is the case as the back pressure stops oil return from the turbo and will cause turbo failure. As Arron says the new vortex one is better,also not a big job to change.
