Great Paxton Cambridgeshire

Anyone living near Great Paxton who could check out a RR P38 which is for sale...looking for a winter run around for the farm and for shoots etc and the one I've seen looks tidy but it's much too far for me to go just to be disappointed. The forums premier drug dealer and human trafficking consultant

I'm about 30 miles away - it's straight down the A1 from me - but unfortunately I know Censored all about P38's

I'm happy to go take a look & try to answer any specific questions you have - and can take photos and FaceTime / Skype if that's of any use ?

If you want a second opinion, I live in Little Paxton - just across the river from Great Paxton.

I don't own a P38 but my son does. Unfortunately he and the P38 are in the USA! Smile

If you want my inexpert view on the vehicle, let me have the details.

This could be a nice wee Christmas bonus for us both Mick, that Jim's minted and he must have a loose screw looking at P38s so a killing is to be made Laughing Laughing Laughing

Just don't let him know we're about to relieve him of his stash from under his mattress

I'm in Abu Dhabi, but pay for my fare home, a hire car and the loss of UAE work income and I'll only charge you half of my usual hourly rate to inspect it.

Bargain, what! Laughing

Talking of those pipes, I enjoyed a lovely orange / tobacco shisha over the weekend at an Arabic restaurant. There's something immensely sociable about puffing on those things. Si. <This is my name.

Just received Bryan's report. This car looked good on the garage website but clearly one to avoid and just shows you how invaluable this forum can be when members will go out of heir way to help each other... Thanks Bryan and Alistair too for his offer of help...top men the both of you Thumbs Up

"Hi Jim - I think I have saved you a fruitless journey south! Smile

I went to see the car this morning. Their lot is tightly packed with cars and they were not about to move the Rangie for better access so my viewing was restricted and they refused to let me drive it ("only if you are the actual buyer from Scotland"!). I did see enough to persuade me that I personally would not buy it. At the price (lower than others of that era I have seen in the past) and bearing in mind that it is a SEVEN owner 15-year old car with apparently little or no available service history, it may be OK as a farmyard hack - and it certainly looks as if it has been used that way in its recent past. The current MoT certificate has advisories for a lighting fault (dim bulb?) and an oil leak (where unspecified)

The bodywork I was able to see (all their cars were dripping wet with melting frost) looked as shown in their pictures - no obvious visible dents or scratches remaining.
The interior looked worn and tired - perhaps what you would expect of a hard used 15 year old car - and there was damage to the headlining over the rear left passenger seat.

The engine bay was filthy with the alloy parts heavily corroded. There is an oil leak on the front left corner of the engine - perhaps a valve cover - but on my son's P38 it was a head gasket (although I saw no evidence of 'mayonnaise' in the oil or oil in the coolant reservoir).
The ignition 'ON' warning showed 'Airbag Fault' and 'EAS Manual' (the latter I suppose because the self-leveling system has been replaced by coil springs).
The engine started OK and appeared to idle and rev smoothly, but since I was not able to take it out on the road I couldn't really assess it or obviously check the transmission or steering.

The boot area under the carpet housing the spare wheel, jack etc. was filthy too and I could see daylight through the floorpan under the spare wheel housing (bare tyre BTW) - perhaps where the original air pump had been removed when they converted to coil springs?

At that point, I didn't even bother checking the climate control system / radio etc or the switchgear / lights etc., I had seen enough.

Jim, I got the impression, in the off-hand manner of the guy I met there, that on seeing me arrive in my pristine L322 'the game was up' and he knew he would be wasting his time to try to 'sell' me the car so his "here are the keys, help yourself" attitude resulted and he went back to doing paperwork in the office. When I had finished looking over the car and returned the keys, he didn't even bother to ask me what I thought!

Sorry mate, hope this isn't too much of a disappointment to you."
