Fitted a CD multi changer from a salvage dealer. First what a job and after following the instructions on several sites and utube I found you did not need to disengage the lock cable just un bolt it, still I managed to keep the spring in place so no drama there.
My questions 1st I could only find two multi plugs and no optic cable by the looks of the connector on the back of the unit, what does that do anyway?
Second there has been an adaptor spliced into the larger multi jack, that goes to a silver box a little larger than a cigarette packet. This has a pair of large audio jacks that appears to go under the carpet rearwards - something to investigate another time. There are several holes in the side of the glove box so I assume something went in there.
Any way the BMW 6 CD multi changer works fine from the navigation unit and the steering wheel.

That box will be a non original unit fitted, could be lots of things...

Sliver box with audio jacks will more than likely be a CD emulator ( a gizmo to fool the car into thinking it's got a CD player, but it is in fact an aux input for ipod's and the like)

If your CD player has a coaxial socket on it then it will not work with your car, it is for a 2005 on touch screen, you will need a 2002 - 2004 unit with a 10 pin socket ( assuming that the plug in the glovebox is a single 10 pin, or the BMW type which is a 3 pin and a 6 pin plug. You will find this plugged into the unit with the audio jacks, which is pretending to be a CD changer at the moment

I suspect that as you have an emulator plugged in, your car will have the 3/6 pin plugs, or that the previous owner has changed the 10 pin plug to 3/6. This could be a problem...... you will need to look at the plugs and see how many wires are going to the 6 pin plug, if you have 5 wires then all is good. If you have less then it has been converted from a 10 pin plug and you might have to add some wires to get it all working. If there are 5 wires in the plug then you have the earlier type loom and a BMW 6/3 pin CD changer will fit as well as early LR one and MG / Rover.

All is not lost though, as most of the 10 pin to 6/3 pin guides only move the minimum amount of wires and leave the rest in the old 10 pin plug, so follow the wires from the emulator and hopefully you'll find the 10 pin plug. Then it's just a case of reversing the procedure and you'll have 10 pin wiring, ready for a CD changer from a later pre 2005 Range Rover, MG, or Rover with the 10 pin socket. Which while it is less common, it is also less desirable as all the ipod / phone adapters are sporting the 3/6 pin sockets, and therefore doesn't command such a high s/hand resale price

The audio leads heading rearwards will more than likely have been for an ipod so should pop up around the console, or they might have been for play station / dvd in the rear seats  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Yes it is 6 and 3 which plugged straight in. Piggy backed on that wiring is a connecter that plugs into the silver box. I've pulled that off, did not notice how many pins on that plug and the silver box is in the back of the garage right now.

You've got the earlier wiring for the CD changer, I have no idea what the extra plug socket is for as my unit is the later 10 pin plug type. The silver box is aux input that would allow you to play an ipod through the car without the need of one of those less than good FM modulators. Normally they replace the CD changer, and the wires plug straight in, but you said that it was piggy backed into the wires.......... would it have been possible to plug in the CD player and leave the sliver box still wired? If so then sounds like it's the LR unit, as that is the only one that I know of that retains the CD player........... expensive
