How did the sound deadening work out for you ? I'm interested in doing that but I remember talking to Craig about it and although he said he did it to 1 of his he would never do it again Did you strip out the entire interior to do it ? Do you have any images of your engine blanket fitted ? Does it cause any overheating issues ?

Ive just had it pampered with a good service and its driving really nice, LoL, it knows its future is being discussed !

I didn't do the whole car as many parts of the FF are well insulated already, I just did the areas that were lacking in sound insulation material.

For the sound deadening I used 4mm sheets (twice as thick as their normal one) of silent coat sound deadening and with the engine blanket also it made a big difference. With the silent coat I did the entire spare wheel area and lower tailgate. Then up the front I did under the bonnet (under the LR sound deadening so not visible) also the pollen filter housing as it goes quite far back.

The engine blanket is made by a company called noise killer and they sell alot of them for the old noisy defenders etc.

The medium size is the one you want for a TD6, you put as much as possible down the back of the engine then it just cable ties on. Hasn't altered the engine temp at all as it doesn't cover the whole engine just the back and the top.

I would highly recommend the Terraclean, for the sake of £100 it made a big difference on my car, it idles smoother now and generally drives better also. I also gained around 2-3mpg. If you haven't done so already is worth blanking your egr valve and also removing your viscous fan as this adds to the noise and isn't really required in the uk as long as you keep your ac running.

Next on my list is to get a bluefin remap as these make a big difference also.

That said, my two penneth for what it's worth would go for the 4.2 Touareg. I had a 2012 Altitude a couple of years ago and it was a really good car. What stands out is the engine and gearbox combo. It properly flies but can be relatively economical. In fact it was more econical around town than my Evoque and once got 42 on a trip to Scotland.

The kit list is good but you have to watch the leather. (Nappa is nice but standard less so) mine had remote park heating, adaptive cruise and most of the kit that comes with FFRR. The ride is fine on 20s but I'd probably go for air suspension on bigger wheels but it's not in disco/FFRR class.

They stopped making this engine last year, which is a shame but they can be picked up cheaply and I had no issues with mine, although it was new (pre reg) and what made it even better was that I got my money back twelve months later, which was a result. After twelve months though I was back to Landrover for a Discovery before buying the full fat nine months ago because you just realise that Landrover do do things well, just not everything.

OP, have you thought outside the box at all? Before getting my FF, I very seriously looked at a new shape (2009 onwards) Dodge Ram 1500. Available most commonly with the 5.7 hemi V8 or the 6.7 Cummins I6 Diesel, they are modern, refined and the top spec Laramie/Longhorn trim levels easily rival a european suv for interior luxury and quality. The 2013 onwards update even brought in air suspension! The 1500 is the smallest body version, and in 4 door spec is only 18" longer than an l322 and 2" wider, so it isn't exactly massive either. The only reason I didn't end up with one was due to finding my 05 FF at about half the price of a good Ram!
