Shocked Built in amp, Virtual surround sound Shocked

I don't care how much they big up the sound, there is no way that will sound as good as a proper 7.1 system with speakers correctly placed. In fact I think it would be hard pushed to beat a proper 5.1 system.

I had a very early JVC DVD surround system, proper 5.1, thought that it sounded great.......... then I got the Onkyo 7.1 with descent speakers and discovered how bad the JVC was Shocked If the sound is supposed to be coming from the rear and the sides, there is no way that it can be bettered just from a speaker in front. Is there no way of raising the tv on a bridge affair? 2 blocks and a plank so it sits over the centre speaker. Or if solid riser is required, do it in soft wood and clad it with oak flooring, dam sight cheaper than buying a solid oak sleeper.

In fact you could veneer a soft wood block a cut costs even more, How much are you going to see with a wacking great TV on top and a centre speaker in front?

FYI it will sound weedy the power they are quoting is 550 w Total Power ( this is a lot less than RMS that proper systems are rated by), I think total power is the max peak without damage for a nano second, RMS is a measure of a more continuous output, and is a lot lower that total power. ie 100 watts RMS is louder than 100 watts Total power, way way louder!

Or to put it another way, if they can get 550w amp in to a waffer thin case with speakers, why is a 550w RMS amp 3 times the size? Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Thinking im going to have to lump it to be honest now as sony have confirmed they don't offer anything which is annoying. Another option would have been if just the centre channel could have been pushed over HDMI to the TV but that doesn't look possible either so hey ho!

May try a rear speaker in its place as they are a bit smaller as well and as the room isn't big it shouldn't make too much difference but it would go from 2 drivers down to 1...

Worth a shot i suppose Smile

The TV could be raised a number of ways but the only way I'll be happy with is with wood that matches exactly whats there. If i could find a cheap second hand unit that was damaged i could cut up whats needed from it and put the TV stand on a plinth with recess cut into it to sit the speaker into a little... FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

What about a slim speaker either side - both cabled up as a centre speaker ?

Something like this ?

Nothing on the rear sides to screw stuff to Sad

The front Onkyo's sit either side of the TV as well currently but could be spaced if needed i guess...

I have been thinking about using an old Dell undermonitor speaker unit but again i think its powered and currently sat in the garage Sad FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Glue Thumbs Up

Dell monitor speakers are powered - they plug into the headphone socket

It will sound better if your Left & Right speakers are further away from the TV anyway

Mr Kingpleb sir have you thought about some thing like this? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LARGE-CLEAR-PERS...SwHnFVgqA7

I know it's not wood but you'll see the wood under it, it will make the TV float Thumbs Up Oh and that was just the first reasonable priced one on fleabay, there are lots, if they aren't wide enough use 2 to lift the TV. You know how big the thing is, tape measure time Wink I've seen 1",2",3" and 4" thicknesses, and a large range of sizes.

Also is there any mileage in placing the centre speaker behind the TV? as there looks to be a reasonable size gap under the stand to let the sound through........... not ideal, but very cheap Wink Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

So far behind the TV seems to be working well. I need to adjust the angle of the speaker to lean it forward a bit more and get some more speaker exposed to underneath as they angle up a little in their normal position.

I've also done +2 on the centre speaker volume to make up for the fact that about 1/3 of the speakers output will just be bouncing off the back of the tv Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's
