Pete......it sounds Sweet pall Thumbs Up Thumbs Up , but you will get fed up of it soon or later Laughing , I have a D1 with a twin out let and D catted system....sounds nice but at 70 on the motorway it gets a little on your nerves....mind others may like it Laughing If it dont work.......burn it!

If the IId tool cant fix it.......burn the FF.

If the FF cant be fixed......buy a Land Cruiser!

If the LC cant be fixed..............................................BUY a horse !!

You'll probably find you'll only need to replace the standard back box with a couple of small silencers on each tail pipe to bring it down to a pretty reasonable level. Yeah they may still get bashed but there will be less there to bash than the massive standard one.

A Classic with no exhaust at all would frighten most people when you started it up. Was quite fun for the couple of days while we waited for the manifold gaskets to arrive. Twisted Evil

Shandonman, well spotted, the yard of bricks...

WD... was fed up with it 5mins after taking it off.... it's much louder in person than that clip, makes your ears bleed....

Zirconblue, depends on the silencers, the original is a massive job, two little boxes wouldn't do much at all, I've got all the bit's together now, to reduce the sound you need to reduce the size of pipe as well, the original tailpipes are smaller bore than the middle pipes... anyway if it's not quiet after this then it will have an original back on and a massive skid plate.... Pete

agreed the original is massive, but it does make the car basically silent.

I would assume for off roading you don't really need it to be silent but just reduced to a bearable level?

I think a smaller box on each tail pipe would do that for you, would probably have a nice burble under load but not bring house lights on when you drive down the street at night, and you wouldn't have a headache after a days green laning.

Reducing the pipe diameter (performance issues aside) will change the pitch of the exhaust but not necessarily the over all noise in terms of decibels. I mean listen to a Morris 1000, Mini or MG Midget with a peashooter exhaust, they're bloody loud even at idle, because higher pitched sounds travel further in the air. Sticking a big bore exhaust on any of them, they're still loud but a low burble is far easier on the ears.

I think if i were you i might try a couple of scrap exhaust boxes from the skip at kwikfit or similar and see what the noise level is like with them lashed on there, if it's acceptable then look at some decent boxes to fit. Smile

Saw one the other day near home with 4 huge stainless pipes out the back,couldnt see a box,not as loud as this one but sounded great all the same and his pipes looked fantastic,not sure what he must have paid for them !!

Right, being the tight git that I am I decided to do it with second hand parts, well, some of it, found a rear box from an Audi S4 that was smaller in every direction than the original one, best bit was it's less then 3 1/2 inches top to bottom and it's made of Stainless Steel...

Went to an exhaust place I know and persuaded them to let me use their bender and stretcher so knocked up a few bits and bobs...

When you cut off the rear box you end up with this...



I then cut them back to here and added two slip joints, also took about 5" out of the length of the pipe so the bend in front hugs the diff a bit better, reducing the angles and the pipe length to keep the new box as tight as possible up to the rear subframe...



Propped the new box in place with a transmission stand, offered the pipe back up, made a 2 into 1 and tacked it up in place, then removed it and welded it all up apart from the slip joints...



Bent up two new mounts out of stainless bar, welded them on then cut the old tips of the FF box to finish off this one and have the exhaust facing down...

It's much further out the way than the old one, should be fine off road and the best bit is it's nearly as quiet as the original box, the awful drone at motorway speeds has gone...

Gave it the once over with a wire brush in the grinder, might clean the rest of the paint off it and just leave it like that.....



I'm happy and the neighbours are talking to me again... :thumbsup:

Pete, aren't you supposed to drift around the bends like the Bowler? Wink

That box is a lot smaller that the old one, but isn't it still a wee bit exposed? any plans for a shield / sliders to save it? Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

It's pretty well tucked out the way, bit difficult to see from the photo but you have to get much further back before you can see it under the bumper, you can see half the rear subframe first, and my bumper is shallower than a standard one....

It would be easy to fit a guard to it but I think it will be OK... Thumbs Up Pete
