Cleaning the inhibitor switch?

As I'm having problems with the gearbox going into "trans fail safe" I'm going to remove the inhibitor switch & give it a clean as I've read that can sometimes sort the issue.

Do I need to disconnect the battery before doing any work & if so why? Never have on any other car.
Also what is the procedure for cleaning the switch?

Also had the "trans lowbox neutral message" & "trans overheat" yesterday when I tried to use on a small run. 2004 RR 4.4 V8 Autobiography

as long as the FF is asleep and there's no power going to the switch then i dont think a battery disconnection is needed... ... - .- -.
