Temp Gauge up then down when warming up

Hi

I got my first FFR at the weekend, 56plate, 3.6tdv8, 85k miles, which I am very happy about.

Something that i have noticed is that from a cold start the temperature gauge moves slowly through the blue, to only drop back down the bottom again, it does this a few times, getting further each time. After 5 mins of driving its verticle and stay there....any ideas?

I've searched around but it's normally relating to overheating not this issue.

any help ideas greatly appreciated.

I don't know the 3.6 setup, but engines can dip the temp during warm up cause the the stat stays closed initially to keep the coolant circulating in the engine block only, then when warming, the stats open, which lets the cold coolant from the radiator flush through, bringing the temp down ... * possibly *

The dip isn't really observed normally, cause the stat opens gradually and so the cold coolant is filtered into the warm stuff over time, thereby not dipping.

I suppose in theory if the stat wasn't working smoothly, and jumping , it could step like that . . . But as I say I don't know the 3.6 V8 or else ...

wouldnt worry to much, so long as it isn't losing coolant, from the header (bear in mind to check it at the same time of day so as the coolant is at the same temp) fisha could be right, but so long as the temp when it has warmed through is stable it sounds as though everything is working ok.

could also possibly be a faulty thermistor which reads the coolant temp, maybe not working optimally at lower temperatures and drops out at certain points. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
