I Finally Found Tires

In the U.S. we do not have many tire choices in 255 55 R19, and the Cooper Zeon LTZ was the best option for anything resembling an A/T tire. Well, that has changed!

On a whim, I checked Tire Rack and found that they just started stocking Goodyear Durtracs. The country of origin is Germany, so I guess they may be testing the waters to see if there is demand here.

I now have five Duratracs waiting to mounted and I am giddy.

This may not be a big deal to those of you who have options in this size or who have 18" rims, but this is huge for me.

Merry Christmas (almost)!

I for one would love to know how you get on. When I replaced my set I settled on General Grabber ATs (note the AT is actually the newer version - for some reason they renamed the old version to AT2... I subsequently look it on some green lanes up in the Lake District. Despite the consensus (from Defender owners) that it was more capable off-road I did write-off two virtually brand-new (<500 miles) tyres that weekend.

What I would like is a bit more reinforcement on the side-walls if possible (tempted by some Goodyear MTRs but they don't produce them in a 19" rim anymore from what I can work out). Don't particularly care about compromising the comfort (I upgraded from a Series III 88 to a 300Tdi Defender to a FF so it's pretty damn good as it is).

This is from the D2BC forum posted by a member in Bulgaria which might be interesting to you:
Re GY Duratracs
"I'm running a set of these since March 2013 - same size, load rating 120 (there is a version of that size with a load rating of 108, suggest to avoid it)

Very pleased with them, especially compared to the old set of BFG AT's I was running. Not a single issue with the strength of the sidewall nor suffered any punctures so far. Good tarmac manners although not that good as a street tire when wet, so have that in mind.

Do wear quickly than BFG AT but not that bad so far, currently close to 20k km, thread is ~75-80/% from new, and the blocks do have some slight rounding but not very obvious

hope this piece of feedback would be of some help to you - although my local conditions are probably not very comparable to yours (south east corner of EU)"

Followed by a post from a member in Norfolk:
"Hi run these for 2+ years now, very happy with them would deffo fit them again."

Hope that is of some help. John

Just put 4 Duratracs on mine in November pick them up from camskill saved a small fortune , even after shipping and fitting it was £20:00 a corner cheaper than my local tyre fitter could do which payed for the 4 wheel alignment .
So far so good but it's early days yet, I did notice more road noise but that is only to be expected with this type of tire.
I have not really noticed any problems on wetroads but our max speed over here is only 40mph Big Cry
I have been across a few muddy fields and over the sand dunes with no problems but nothing extreme.

Congrats! Great tyres. I put on my FF a few months back.

I'm in SA, so choices also limited.

They look really good!

I posted a few pics of mine in an earlier post in this thread in the snow near Cape Town in winter 2013.

I dropped my tyre pressure a bit too much and ended up with two tyres with sidewall damage. Goodyear was nice enough to overlook my error and replace at no charge.

Other than that, grip is fantastic.

I don't feel very confident airing down 19's. When you do air down, what pressure do you prefer?

Also, how do they handle the snow?

It looks like you have been enjoying your FF. Thumbs Up

I spoke to one of the higher ups at Goodyear in South Africa and he suggested not more than about 20%, otherwise you end up with excessive sidewall flex, which could lead to damage. With low profiles, you are deflating just enough to give your tyres some 'give', so that if you drive over something sharp, the tyre will deform over it, as opposed to getting damaged.

Most of our trails in Cape Town are dry and rocky, so the snow is a novelty! They handled really well, other than the sidewall damage on 2 tyres, which meant we had to make liberal use of plugs so that I could at least get home.
