Almost a year ago to the day I replaced my 2006 Tdi battery with a brand new heavy duty one. First sign of cold weather this year and I'm having to use a starter pack to get the car going. I contacted the suppliers (Tayna) and they tell me that the problem is that I need to charge the battery.

So, is it possible to charge the battery in situ and, if so, do I have to disconnect the leads before doing so as there seem to be conflicting views about this on Google?

I think a lot of members òn here use the ctek battery charger, which I am looking into buying shortly. There are various ways to hook it up without disconnecting from the car. As I haven't got the 12s tow socket I will probably go for comfort fit under bonnet. There should be a few threads on here if you use the search.
I'm sure someone will be along shortly with other suggestions.

Get yourself either a CTek MXS5.0 or MXS7.0 battery charger. Both perfectly capable of charging a battery on a TD6, the MXS7 is just slightly faster. No need to disconnect the battery from the car, you can either connect to the battery, jump posts, thro a permanently live accessory socket or a towbar connection.

Just a thought, why is your battery down on charge? Is the car not used regularly?

do you get a proper 3 pin plug with the CTek or do you have to buy it as an additional item? I only ask because all the pics and user instructions on the web show a two pin continental plug.

If you buy it in the UK you get a 13A 3pin plug as standard.

I was thinking the same........what's happening to mean you need to charge a new battery........

I have a CTek charger which is great, i give the FF a full charge every few months as i don't use it as an every day vehicle. I also put two 1.5w solar chargers from Maplin's in the rear windows with a two into one cable through to the cubby box 12v outlet, most of the cable is hidden, just keeps the battery topped up

Right that's a CTek on my Xmas list then.  Travelling around in circles again.

In response to one of your questions, l use the car a lot, usually motorway journeys, but the battery doesn't seem to be holding charge.

Sounds like you have some sort of battery drain issue going on there, either that or a charging issue. With that type of use the battery should be tip top. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

What you really need is a voltmeter of the type that plugs into a permanently live power socket so that you can see what is happening to the battery voltage whilst the car is standing and whilst driving.

Many thanks for the additional advice. I think it may well be a drain/not charging issue so will ask for this to be checked when it's in for its next service.
