wise to replace Torque converter only?

Have read a lot of RR Phils and others' posts ref gearboxes etc.

Am thinking of carrying out a pre-emptive strike on my 170,000 mile 2004 4.4 V8 and replacing just the Torque converter before anything starts to go wrong and damages the GB.I know you can get a kit to replace everything for £1800 (is that realistic?) I am looking at paying only £500-600 all in.

Before acting, I want to know whether anyone has done this and if this is advisable now or wait for signs of it going wrong:

1. Is it advisable to just replace the TC on its own without other components as well ? (current GB running fine and changing sweetly at the moment)

2. Which make/brand TC to go for (New or refurbed?) or refurbish current one?

3. Costs? (is it really 5 hrs labour?) cost of replacement TC?

Many thanks
DB

Yes seen those. At £150 for a TC, i could get my local indie to fit, hence the 5 hr? Q and at £40/hr, it is a cost effective option.

Just wondered whether replacing the Tc on its own is going to be enough or will it let probs arise further down the line?

I am intending to get my baby past 200,000 miles!

try ringing Dave and asking him as to benefits or if its worth while, i am note sure how much wear your would have and if it would be justified.

5hrs for Gbox (or engine out) replace and refit is good i would of thought on one of these (speaking having never done one)

/\ was it river stock that got an uprated one and the gearbox ecotune ecu for his. I liked the sound of all that but then read one of rrphil's posts about poss causing issues with the tc locking up to soon.

I know it's not exactly what you asked, but if you are doing it you may want to look at all the options.

I was thinking of the tc upgrade in my post above, rather than the ecu one, which as Roger rightly points out, has had a bit of negative press. According to the seller he has resolved the issues now.......if I remember right....... 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

There’re only a couple of ‘standard’ faults with the 5HP24 in the L322. One is the torque converter lock-up clutch (which you’re seeking to address) and the other is the axial bearing failure between the B-clutch hub & the C-clutch drum. Because the likelihood of failure of the latter will depend on how much time your vehicle has spent in 1st, 2nd & 3rd gears, and at what speed & load, it’s very difficult to predict a mileage at which this might occur (if, indeed, ever). If the vehicle has spent much of its life in hilly areas towing trailers then clearly it’s going to happen sooner than if the majority of its duty cycle consists of travelling up and down the motorway.

Your suggestion to pre-empt LUC failure seems very sensible to me. The book time for removing and replacing the transmission is 4.7 hours (previously 5.4 hours). When my local (independent) garage swapped my TC it was the first time they’d done the job on an L322 and it took them 5.5 hours.

If you have your TC remanufactured I would strongly suggest that you only use a company that has experience in setting up the LUC in the Sachs WA4/W260 S-2GWK unit used in the Range Rover (e.g. JPAT or Sussex Auto Parts). The abutment for the tangential driving straps (which double as return springs for the LUC piston) is friction welded into place at the factory and, as the piston movement is only in the order of 1mm, it has to be re-welded into place very accurately.

If they get this bit wrong you’ll actually be worse off than before you started.

Phil

Phil, once again you are the Oracle!! I am determined to drop off a case of beer next time I am passing your gaff!

Following your words of wisdom, I am going to go ahead with it. I am thinking of just getting one sent from Sussex autos. That way I don't have to send them mine for refurbishment and extra time off the road. I take it Phil, their one will have had the LUC sorted!?

Many thanks
DB

For what it's worth, I sent mine to JPat. They collected it on a Friday and I had it back the following Tuesday.

I was quoted £180+VAT from Sussex Auto Parts earlier in the year for recon.
Turnaround was 1 day, basically they said if they got it on a Wednesday you would get it back on the Friday.
They didn't have any stock so I ended up taking mine down there and they were extremely helpful. Once they found out I had a 2 hour drive to get there they offered to refurb it as I waited (they reckoned on 2 hours). Then they went out of their way to provide a replacement from another order (which they said they wouldn't normally do, they get a regular bulk refurb order in from Germany for about 60-70 TC's) and then only charged me £150 inc VAT.
I thoroughly recommend them.
TC has been in for 6 months now and no issues.
