About a month ago I went and had tyres blown up and this fitter was on about he wanted a manual I said you'll be lucky and he said he'd seen a few but LHD so I took no notice then later in the day I saw my mate who's looked after landys for years and he said there were quite a few mainly police vehicles, I've looked around and searched about and seen no sight of any at all anyone on here got experiences of any manual boxes ? _____________________________________________________

Yes, BMW dropped the manual box idea fairly early in development. That's not to say they didn't do a bespoke build, if the money was right, but I've not heard of one.

Never seen an L322 manual, but a friend of mine had a manual P38

Funny, before I got the L322, I'd had Disco 2s and thought "has to be manual for the slippy stuff"

Because one of our admin girls didn't know better, we asked for a 4X4 for a site in Scotland and a freelander 2 auto turned up.... it was BRILLIANT, we drove over a HEP dam at Cruachan reservoir in really sketchy weather, it didn't miss a beat.

Now I have the L322 I'm not sure I could be bothered with a manual (unless it was a sports car!)

I reckon it would be physically doable through using bmw x5 parts for pedals and cylinders ... The area does look like it would take it.

As for the electrics.... Don't know. V8 or else ...

I'd never heard of a P38 manual either. Here, the choice was 4.0 auto or 4.6 auto (both the Rover V8 petrol). On the weekend, saw a P38 DSE (ex Germany) for the first time with a manual. Owner liked it, but said it didn't have a lot of low end grunt. He also stalled it on a steep grade. I was surprised as I thought a Land Rover (any type) in LOW range had enough torque! (I don't know. He may have been in HIGH.)

I drove a P38 manual....2.5 DHSE...Hateful car, so sluggish...

I 'think' I have seen a L322 manual....ex police psec on fleabay advertised as "rare manual"...BUT i am not 100% sure, maybe was a P38 Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

I can't see it would be cost effective for LR to offer, esp in low volume. BMW would take the view that the manual steptronic mode would suffice. All you are missing is a clutch pedal from a driving point of view.

Not sure you can. Only the 3 and 5 series would have had a possible donor manual box. I think outside of the uk, 4 wheel drive options called an X were available, for eg 525iX, though whilst nearer in config did not have low range and such like.

Sorry, yes, stupid Jesus pad with its auto correct typing - I meant steptronic. I'm sure BMW will have seen that as quite adequate as a manual substitute in that type of vehicle, so didn't offer a proper manual box option.

I understand a manual is preferred amongst the off roading community for when the going gets really tough. All Camel Trophy cars were manuals. My mate had a genuine camel trophy Disco, and that used to stall a lot if you'd chosen the wrong gear at the bottom of a steep climb.

Never had a gear choice issue with my V8 auto classic in the same conditions, and I didn't lose drive when dipping the clutch to change gear.

From my experience, the big benefit of a manual is having a locked drive line with no slippage at the torque converter like you get with an automatic, especially in the low gears. I find this most useful when towing on long up hills where you can fall back on the grunt of the engine in a set gear, as opposed to the auto down shifting and revving the nuts off the engine.

Obviously shifting is better with the auto, so to me, the perfect gearbox would be one where you could have a setting to make the lockup the priority over shifting. V8 or else ...

Always had autos for off roading, much better than manuals IMHO, when the going gets very tough you will find it very hard to snap a half shaft or rip out a UJ with an auto, in a manual, lift a wheel, spin it up and then come in contact with the ground and something has to give as the driveline is fixed, hence something breaks, in an auto the torque convertor allows slip and nothing breaks...

Much easier to control wheel spin without stalling and far better at failed hill climbs where it is imperative to get into reverse quickly to control the decent...

Having said all that with the clever electrics the FF has most of these issues are irrelevant anyway..... Pete
