Transmission problems

Hi there everyone I have a 2006 rr 4.4 vogue
I was driving down a duel carriageway and the transmission started to slip and flashed up limited gears available
I had no choice but to ease off and carry on to a safe place to stop
Upon stopping did smell a bit burnt and then was unable to select gears would indicate gear but not engage
Called recovery tech guy came out first said possible torque converter failure he revved engine and heard a big high pitched squeak
Read the fault codes next day came up with 5th gear and 6th gear incorrect ratio and transmission overheat.
Removed sump pan and quite obvious metal debris but seems fresh debris if u understand what I mean
I'm not an auto expert and any help would be much appreciated thanks in advance

I'm not an auto expert either, but my guess is an auto expert would tell you your gearbox is f*cked. Sad

hello mate, sorry to hear your news. this post has had 26 views and not one "welcome".
so firstly hello!

I'm newbie to the FF, however a quick search on here will give lots of possible indications. however some will need more info to help a diagnosis.
how many miles has your FF done? what's the service record like and when was the gearbox last serviced? have there been any issues leading up to this such as slipping on inclines etc?

I'm sure someone will be along with some possibilities.
in the meantime read the searches on here re the FF weak point.

I kinda gathered that lol after solutions please rebuild costs or whether parts are available and where to source them from
Possible causes For example would the torque converter failing throw the debris into the box and would just cleaning box out fix it or if anyone knows anyone that rebuilds them as a hobby.
How do you even tell if the torque converter failed ?? Stuff like that thanks

Welcome.

Just to be clear, you're vehicle is a 2006 Model Year with the Ford / Jaguar 4.4 V8 and 6 speed ZF 6HP26 gearbox?

OK, lots on here about gearboxes:

TD6 with the GM 5 speed
4.4 V8 (BMW) with the ZF 5 speed

Both of which have their issues but are a totally different configuration to you car so don't let this lead you down the wrong path. The ZF 6 speed to date has been relatively problem free although with some time and miles some bits and bobs are appearing. Evil or Very Mad

Maybe worth calling A1 Transmissions tomorrow. Their car park is full of 4x4s, many are Land Rover products. It's worth a call to see what they say although I guess they will just want to throw a recon gearbox at it..... Big Cry

Good luck with it. Let us know how you get on. 2006 4.2 SC

Bit of an update got bored of people quoting mega money so
Stripped the box tonight and I found that clutch B as in rrphil strip down info had bad friction plates
So much that the casing has eaten into box
Just wondering if it would be ok to replace the friction plates and rebuild or would it need new casing
Thanks

Could you post some photos of the damage?

There are 7 official ZF part suppliers in the UK : http://www.zf.com/eu/content/en/great_brit...rs_uk.html

but I may be able to help out.

Phil
