Delay when engaging 1st gear - new gearbox just fitted

I have had a new gearbox fitted, but when I start the car from cold and select drive there is a small delay of a few seconds when i press the accelerator before the car engages 1st gear and starts moving. It almost feels initially like it is in limp mode, but after 2-3 seconds it starts to move.

When the car is warm it seems to engage 1st gear instantly as it should and always did before the replacement box was fitted.

Is this an issue of low transmission oil or something else?

I will contact the gearbox specialist today but just wondered what the forum's thoughts are.

Answers on a postcard please....

Oil level it takes a while to get oil into all the nooks and crannies so new /recon boxes often needs a top up after a few hundred miles. Thumbs Up

I have had a similar case recently.

Great to hear it is common on brand new boxes. I new it was a potential sign of failure on an old box. Was initially worried my new box might be damaged after 100 miles on it. I will contact the mechanic and get it booked in for a top up. Tom

Dropped it off and auto box specialist thought it might be the oil valve from the torque converter that is meant to hold oil when the car is parked so that when started again has oil ready for immediate engagement. He is carrying out diagnostics tomorrow morning with the car cold and will get back to me. Tom

After 2 weeks diagnostics and being checked out by the torque converter company (that supply LR) they have found the issue to be a non return valve on the TC, it was faulty and sometimes draining the oil when parked so that on start up it took time to build up the pressure.

Fingers crossed all will be well now..... Tom

Well, just had a call from the gearbox company, the problem is still there in 2 out of 10 start up gear selections so now the torque converter company is going to do a complete rebuild. Then my gearbox company will check it for a day before returning it to me.

Hopefully I will get it back next week....... Sad Tom
