Staten Island ferry is really good value and you get great views. Don't bother spending time on Staten Island, just head back. I didn't bother with the Statue of Liberty tour - it's great to see from the ferry but the queue's didn't for me make it worthwhile to see the inside of it.

There's a circle boat tour of Manhattan which took a long time, and I didn't think that was worthwhile. Much of Manhattan isn't so spectacular from the waterfront - the Staten Island ferry gives you the best bit.

As a plane spotter USS Intrepid is well worth the trip - and only a shortish walk from Times Square. I'd say even for a non-aviation buff or even a woman it would be interesting as it's all crammed tightly on a small aircraft carrier deck.

As an art philistine I liked the Metropolitan museum - spend a whole (rainey) day there.

One other thing - Manhattan isn't that big - walk around and see it from the ground. It's all interesting to look at and see. My favorites were the Woodstock tower because it looks so Gotham City, the Pan Am building (now Met Life I think) because it's so ugly, the Empire State which you must go up, the Flatiron building as it was the worlds first skyscraper and now looks tiny, and the Chrysler building as it's so Art Deco.

I've been there several times over the last 20+ years. Overall, you can't fail to have a fabulous time there - it's a great city to visit, especially at this time of year when it's not too hot or too cold.

We had left ground zero and walked a block or two then stopped in a Starbucks when a fire broke out opposite in an Indian Restaurant... We had a ring side seat so took some snaps...
