Rear light strip down

At some point moisture has got into my rear light and gone mouldy , I was wondering if anyone has ever stripped the rear light cluster down , ie remove the outer plastic cover, and if it's possible to do without breaking it

You could just take the lights off the car, remove the bulbs and fill the lights with a strong solution of Sodium Hyperchorite (Domestos) and water and leave standing over night.
Rinse out the next day and dry.

Not sure the chrome would take that NDFI as if you get a finger print on it it tarnishes... Confused
