Tdv8 torque converter replaced now noisy

Hi all,

Got a late 2007 Tdv8. The torque converter was on its way out and I changed oils as filter a month ago hoping for a cheaper fix. So fitted the new torque converter, heavy work on a drive. I used a new one to avoid further issues. I had the front on ramps so could only get about 3l of oil in the box. Started it to back off and get level to fill up. The noise on starting was like grinding metal so I shut down immediately. I've done a visual, the box is lined up.
I am told by a mate (Audi/BMW specialist not RR) that on them it will all go together yet doesn't connect if wrong. Or is it fluid levels are low and it takes a while to fill up all the bits inside and I just paranoid.

Thanks in advance for any comments.
