many years ago,on the way to a night club in central london the car me and few mates were travelling in got pulled,it turned out it was done so for having a darker than legal window tint and as we was waiting for the police to do their checks,the old bill picked up on the fact that me mates plate was not legal due to illegal positioning of various letters that made the plate read another word to what it was meant to read ,i got talking to the bobby and i was told that a private plate despite having your name or football club or whatever never belongs to you,its actually the property of the dvla,you as a private party just buy the right to display it on your vehicle...in another word you're subletting it from d.v.l.a..till you give the rights up,either by selling the vehicle the plate is on and not transferring it over to another or by putting it on retention which you pay fee for...
