26.01.2014 Edit - This ended up a longer than expected and at times quite technical thread. For ease, below is a summary of the bulbs that I ended up buying and installing as a result of starting this thread. I've summarised the bulbs bought and installed at the start here because a number of forum members have since asked me which bulbs I ended up buying and I thought it would be easier/ helpful to all to list them at the start of this thread by way of a quick overview. People can then , if interested, read through the thread at their leisure to find out why I bought these particular bulbs and how I have found the performance of the bulbs and suppliers to date (all suppliers used have been excellent demonstrating good before and after sales communication/service and prompt delivery within stated timescales):

Hopefully this post is explained properly and that my grasp is about right.

Aside to ongoing thoughts about having a Halo/ DRL upgrade within the headlight unit, I would like to change existing bulbs that are in the unit. There are 4 bulbs in each headlight unit (Page 265 Owner’s Handbook) and as pictured from our car at the foot of this post:

I’ve looked and have seen posts that seem to cover upgrading bulbs here and there but unless I’ve missed it (apologies if I have) there doesn’t appear to be a post that covers upgrading all of the bulbs in the headlight unit.

I wonder what replacement bulbs/ LED’s people would recommend, where they got them and below I’ve listed the bulbs that should be in the headlight unit (I’m not necessarily looking for the cheapest as I’d like better quality bulbs, I don’t want a blue look and I don’t want any errors or flashing/ flickers on start up or at any other time. The performance and look I want is legal, plug and play, white/ OEM and for all of bulbs to look uniform and 'right' together).

Perhaps people who want to comment/ reply to the relevant parts of this post could please reply as per the following numbered points to make it easier to follow?

To assist, as you look at the image of our existing headlight unit at the foot of this post, I refer below to what the relevant lights are from numbered points 1 to 4 (clockwise direction starting at number 1) :

1A - SMD (Surface Mounted) LED – Can SMD LED be bought for each of the bulbs to be replaced?


1. Direction Indicator – 12V/ 21 Watts


2. Halogen low beam/ xenon bi functional – My existing bi xenon bulbs are original Land Rover. If replacing bulbs 1, 3 & 4 does this bulb which is currently performing well, also need to be changed (to ensure a uniform look) or can it be left alone?


3. Halogen high beam – 12V/ 55 H7 Watts


4. Side lamp & Static bending lamp – 12V/ 5 Watt


5. Side repeater lamps (just pictured on O/S wing) – 12V/ 5 Watt

SMD's are a product range that we are currently growing our stock range of, most so far are panels for interior lights. We have a CANBUS 501 for side lamps but not yet tried it in a FF for size. (it's a big lad!)

Headlamps - We have Osram Nightbreaker Unlimited for both of your H7 & HID units.

Matching them - thats the difficult bit, Street legal headlamp bulbs tend to be of a "warm" colour, Osram upgrades increase your visible light length and spread but not the wattage so they stay that warm colour. LED's or SMD's tend to be a little towards blue or "colder"

Katash changed his sidelights for an improvement to the yellowish sidelight effect hoping for a match to the original 4300K xenon headlight.

Have seen comments about 5000K being preferable but that 5000K are hard to come by.

Are people leaving the original 4300K headlight bulbs in and simply upgrading the sidelights to 6000K (is that legal, does it look right and do the upgraded bulbs cause a flicker on start up as I would not want that)?

i've made subtle changes to my front lights,

i have replaced my main beam h7 55 watt to white halogens which cost around £8 for the pair delivered from ebay.........

side lights are 501 and you will need 'canbus error free' ones if you dont want the flickering on start up, 6000k are the most common temperature bulbs....

my front indicator bulbs have been left as is...

the h8 35 watt cornering bulbs are now white bulbs, again around £8 delivered of ebay...

on my old td6 i did change the xenons to 6000k bulbs which gave a nicer whiter light and i didnt notice any reduction in light output..i'll do this to mine in the future....

my fogs are drls now but you could replace with white h11 55watts ......

a tip is to keep the old bulbs as spares in case one of the new ones goes pop.. ... - .- -.

If this company does have the bulbs, for starters, I'll order a pair of 'pure white' 4-5k as it's the first pair I've seen advertised between 4 & 5k.

certainly 5000k will be the nearest to white but do consider 6000k as this colour temperature is fairly close as well and easier to find.. ... - .- -.

6000k is perceptively more blue than the 5000k if you look at them side by side.

I put 6000k HID bulbs in my headlights, but 1 failed and I've gone back to the OEM colour. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue
Had- 2008 TDV8 Vogue SE in Java black
Had - 2007 S/C in Stornoway Grey

I put a pair of these in my car to replace the standard incandescent side light bulbs. I would say they are slightly whiter than the standard HID's which I believe are 4300k, so would rate these as around 5000k or just over.

Had them in for a few months now and have been more than happy with them. One word of warning with these is they are brighter than the standard bulbs so if you want something that is not too bright then best to avoid these. Personally I prefer them bright but just thought it worth mentioning.

@ Prop - As Stan says, those sidelight bulbs sound like they're just the job... take it they are white without any obvious hint of aftermarket blue?

I would consider them as white, but this is open to interpretation. They are definately more blue than the standard HID's, but they are certainly not tinted blue, more of a crisp white.

On the kelvin scale I would say just over 5000k but definitely lower than 6000k.

Stan you are indeed correct, the SMD 5630 led is approx twice as bright as its predecessor the SMD 5050.

So if your after brightness then always look for 5630 leds.

The seller a referred to in my previous post also does a similar bulb but with a glass lens for the forward facing leds's. Not tried this one though but thought it was also worth a mention.
