Ok well it was going to happen sooner or later, I'm confident that I already know the answer but feel free to add your own experiences, comments, suggestions or tips. Thanks in advance

So everything was normal on my way home, after driving at 60 ish on a dual carriageway I left at my exit and stopped at the junction. As I pulled away I had a lack of power, almost restricted and flat at speed. Having played about with my fault here are the symptoms.

Acceleration is now fine up to 50mph, gear changes are smooth. Car hits 50mph and acceleration drops, at 55mph car judders and any further acceleration is non existent. The engine will not rev past 4000rpm in any gear, manual, sport or drive. Turning off traction control does not help.

I ran the tank almost empty but I'm ruling out fuel delivery (pumps, filter, injector) as car is fine up to 50mph or when held in gear up to 4000rpm.
Service has recently been completed (last month) including both fuel filters.

I'm ruling out engine management and gearbox for the same reasons, and the fact that the fault seems to be linear and predictable.

I'm putting my wallet on the the table right now and suggesting torque converter given the fact it stops slipping around the 50mph mark and if it was kaput logic would say speeds above 50mph would not be possible?

It's off for diagnostics tomorrow at a friends garage, it's a 15 mile drive so I'm going to chance it and head over.

Possibly lock up clutch, does the fault feel like a cattle grid? There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

If I keep my foot to the floor (done it only a handful of times) it judders when being pushed past 50mph, it's not a resonant wobble... It's jerky.

Lock up clutch is associated with the torque converter isn't it? Allowing slip up to 50mph to reduce gearbox wear?

Yes, as far as i am aware, so possibly isnt locking up properly after 50..... Just an idea. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

If you are taking bets here my money is on fuel pressure

(secondary pump to be more precise)

Haha I'd have a bet with you on that one and hope it went in your favour given the price over drive train costs... ill give it a tap and coat of looking at tomorrow just in case. Fuel economy has possibly dropped lately, but I'd put that down to short 20 min trips lately rather than my 700 mile Scotland runs.

The gear changes are silky smooth and quick but that doesn't count for anything against a faulty TC etc...

take a look at fuel delivery pressure when visiting your "friend with gear"
not only fault codes

Ahh ok not that far away then. Thanks for the offer KP, they are cheap enough so if I was pretty sure that was the fault I'd be better off buying one anyways.

Had another 2 min drive today, I might agree with the fuel theory, gears are still silky, selection is AOK but car just can't pull past the 3000 RPM regardless of gear or speed, so in 2nd for example after 25/30 mph I can't go any quicker unless I change gear, then I hit say 45 mph and 3000 rpm etc.

I'm now working away thanks to a last minute call so ill leave the car until I'm back, as always ill keep everyone updates on progress (I know you lot can't sleep at night)

My memory is failing as the symptoms you describe are very similar to what I experienced but I cannot remember exactly which problem caused it.

but if not it will be the other problem I had with the drive train which was a replacement gearbox

FWIW the inhibitor switch is inside the sump on a TD6. .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember
