Looking for FFRR 2006 onwards. Few Questions..

Hi all

Im new to RR, But looking to buy a FFRR as a daily drive/ Towing vehicle

Got this badboy as the weekend car!

My Budget is around £15000 but might be able to stretch to around 18.
Im wanting a 2006 or newer TDV8 with as many options as possible!

Few Questions
How mileage sensitive are they? should i be worried about a high miler?
Is there a list anywhere of the standard options and the optional extras?
Did the Logic 7 come as standard in all Vogues?

Am i dreaming with my budget?

Thanks
Jules

Nice Cool - Exige ?

Prepare yourself for lots of replies to your questions . . .

First question to you is probably how many miles are you going to do in it ? There is a general (ish) consensus of opinion that if your annual mileage is less than say 6k - go for petrol. Lower cost/lower mileage/higher spec ie more bang for your bucks. The "Supercharged Boys" will be along to tell you to get one of those - and they are exceptional value for money . . . .

Several had advised previously not to go for a TDV8 at the lower end of the market due to the complexity of the running gear. That being said, they're all pretty complex, and the TDV8 is highly regarded.

I believe all above Vogue have HK Logic 7 audio - a plus on any car is rear seat entertainment as you can plug audio stuff into the AUX IN in the centre console. As I and several others are experiencing at the moment, it's a PITA without this function. All Vogue SE's have this - and I believe all SC's. Personally, I would go for at least Vogue spec . . .

Remember, if you're going for a high mileage car, your warranty options decrease.

I was looking at buying a car similar to your requirements and was looking at TDV8's. However, my mileage is now low. I settled on a one owner, lowish miles, FSH, AJV8 Vogue. This engine is normally aspirated at 4.4 litres. For my driving at present it returns around 20mpg and goes like bloody hell if you want it to ! Plus, it's £200 cheaper to tax than a TDV8 - it's a no brainer for me.

Good luck !

Thumbs Up Where do you go after one of these . . . ?

Don't worry about the mileage if the servicing has been kept up. I've got a Jag petrol (4.4) and it is often below 2000 rpm on the motorway. Cruising, these engines don't work hard.

Poor servicing is a different story. Also, high mileage spent crawling through town will be different.

Enjoy. What's the sports car?

Close!. Its a Noble M12. Its a 3l v6 twin turbo. Makes about 350bhp, only weights 1070kg. 0-60 is all said and done in around 3.8 seconds.

Service history is a must so i read, as is things like the front diff recall.

Im after something thats going to be relatively economical, (in comparison to the Noble, i mean high 20's) Which is why i thought about going for a Diesel rather than a petrol.

What is the deal with connecting an ipod? is there an interface or a cable that means i can use the ipod through the Nav unit?

There is a LR interface for iPod called an ACM, Audio Connectivity Module.
They can be found occasionally on auction sites or you may be lucky enough to find a car with one fitted already.
You'll find a dock connector in the lower glove box if it has this option.
Had it, loved it!

I think you'll struggle for high 20's even in the TDV8 unless you drive like a saint all the time.
Motorway at 70 might get you high 20's or early 30's Confused

TBH, anything around the 20 mark will do fine!

Found an Alpine box that means the ipod is controllable from the screen. But you have to install a Digital TV box first, like this one

Also, Am i being silly by worrying about cars with mileages over 100,000? Im guessing service history is key at such a mileage

. . . You'll get a mint sensible miles high spec AJV8 for your budget - they occasionally pop up via the LR Used website - If you're after something around 20 ish MPG - that's the one.
Gary (sponsor) may be along to add to this . . .

Don't rule out a SC - Mine happily returns 22 @ 70mph, 17-19 on country A roads but 12-15 round town. If you don't drive them like an idiot they are not as bad as most people think but it is nice to have the extra power when you want it.

When I picked up mine the trip computer showed 10mpg and I was a bit worried but I've never managed to get it that low since having it.

If you defiantly do not want a SC then NEVER test drive one, if you do your plans will likley change.

Edit:- my running average with about 70% town 25% country and 5% M/Way is usually about 17mpg

Also be aware that the 07MY had an pretty major facelift (mostly internal) adding the following things (Not comprehensive list)

Electronic parking brake
Terrain Response
Upgraded aircon
Better sound insulation
Climactic seats (on certain models) - Fantastic in this weather
Cornering headlamps

Few other things - but quality wise the 07MY+ models look much more up-to-date inside.

Another big issue with fuel economy is the length of your trips. My commute is only 20 minutes. Longer drivers, even under the same conditions, yield better results.

I have been only really looking at cars that are post facelift.

Do you think its worth looking at the petrol cars aswell? Im wondering if a diesel will actually end up being cheaper or not!

One of my considerations when choosing aside from the actual car and spec was resale value.
My thoughts were if I keep it for the 5 years originally planned, what sort of market would I be selling into.
I hopefully correctly presumed that the majority buying within that budget would likely be looking for minimal running costs therefore a diesel model may be slightly more desirable. This may mean it retains a little more value.
Of course I can't back this with experience as this is my first FF. I bought it with my head, maybe I should of let my petrol-driven heart over rule it.
Having said that I'm not disappointed with the TDV8 the engine is stonking, very brisk and surprisingly potent, for an almost 3 tonne vehicle.
A year in and I don't look at anything I see on the road day to day and think, I'd rather have one of those.
