I too think it looks a bit unstable. The stand under the hub looks like it will slip with any sideways movement. I am sure you have made sure it is stable tho'.. Thumbs Up Previously..

Up and down movement yes (ooer!) but the hub can't move out or in, and with the tie rod still in place, not much sideways. There is plenty of weight going down onto the stand now the upper and lower arms are off, and the stand is very slightly inclined towards the centre of the car. The halfshaft is also tied onto the anti roll bar, so nuttin' ain't goin' nowhere Thumbs Up I thought about making a stand for it out of wood, bolting it onto the wheel bolts.....

Yep, photos of the finished articles and bush exchange will be forthcoming (as long as stan unlocks the thread Twisted Evil )

Just hope I have the time, the weather and the energy to get it all back together (still got the other side to do!) .

Excellent write-up and very useful for me as I am planning to get into the right side of my 2006 HSE soon. I will use this as my primary textbook and the Rave as my secondary.

A bit of background on why I think I need to do this work:





About 5 months ago, I was trailering my boat to a new sailing club loacated off a country road with a very narrow shoulder and a sea of grass from the edge of the shoulder to the farmer’s fence about 10 metres away. I pulled over to check my position and as I slowly edged on to the grass verge, the whole vehicle dived gracefully into a hidden dry ditch about 1.5 metres deep with a very steep drop. I thought the Rangie would roll over and braced myself for it but luckily it settled on the bottom at a very steep angle with most of the weight resting on the two right side wheels.

About 2 or 3 months later, I developed a high-speed shimmy in the front wheel and that slowly progressed into large vibrations at various speeds that seemed to be triggered by irregularities on the road. My troubleshooting led me to the right side control arms and ball joints in the front. I replaced both of the control arms (and bushings) and one ball joint on this wheel. Everything cleared up and the car is smooth again.

Last week I made a 1,000 mile weekend trip and now I notice that the right rear wheel tire is wearing unevenly. All the wheels were replaced about 30,000 miles ago and they have been wearing evenly until this sudden accelerated wear on the outside part of the thread on the right rear tire. This is the only indication that something might be wrong; no noise, vibration or harshness. However, the car now has about 130,000 miles and I suppose all the bushings and ball joints are tired and ready to let go with any unusual stress such as caused by my excursion into the ditch.

Going to get the wheel off today and do a little prying around before planning the next move. I replaced the top and bottom
rose joints at the hub last year on the left rear wheel so hoping that this job might be similar and so familiar. But not wanting to remove the rear control arms although I fear it would be advisable.
