Home Insurance and Mountain Bikes

Does anyone have any experience of this?

My garage was broke into and the only thing nicked was my bike though they damaged a rigid load liner as part of this mess Sad

Insurance have passed me off to a company called WHEELIES. They have said a comparable bike is on a 2 month wait or I can have a cheque for £100 less than the value of the bike... The bike isn't even US spec as mine was so comes in a horrible drug dealer all chrome colour instead of nice black.

Am I stuck with their offers as even if I take the lower value they want the £150 excess so I still only end up with £219.99 in my pocket Sad

I know other suppliers have the bike i want in the size i want for about the same if not less but i dont think they will deal with the other companies just this Wheelies place who aren't imploring me with confidence in them...

PS the Bike in question is a GT Avalanche 3.0. Mine was a 2010 MY but had the hydro brakes so the current 2013 model is comparable but in such a horrid colour and wheelies only have it in XXL size which is miles away from the Medium I need as I'm only tiny Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

I'd go back to your insurance company - find the cheapest place that has it in stock and that's a fair price.

If the cant get you one, then they should provide a loan bike......

I had the same problem as you but I was given a credit note to spend with them minus the excess so I didn't get the same one again ( went a bit dull and spent the same again plus the credit ) Embarassed

Insurance wont let me deal with another company and the only bike this wheelies place has in stock that's comparable to the 2013 GT Avalanche 3.0 is a Felt Six 70 but i have never heard of them before and am struggling to find a review Sad

I think I'll give them a ring and say the cost isn't my issue now that I've paid the excess and that I have found places that have it in stock and while I'm not happy about it being uk spec and not US (why can you not get a dark colour in the UK Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad I hate blingy colours Sad

So not chuffed with the home insurance company now and think I'll give them a chance before I name and shame them Smile

This is kinda close to what I had colour wise

This is what I've been offered

Well im starting to think about buying the bike once i get to the states and flying it back.

Has anyone got any advice on a good cheap Bike Bag at all? they seem to vary in size from £30 upto £150!!
Buying over there is about 2/3 the cost of over here so if i take the stupid low payout they are offering i could easily afford the bike i want and maybe a higher spec'd version with some extra chucked in.

My thinking is if i get a cheap bag i can use all the packing bits that come with the bike in the box to help pad it out and protect it in the hold and maybe chuck in some old wool jackets to add some extra padding Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Great stuff it sounds like a plan then Smile

Get the UK bike if it EVER turns up or the cash, and when i go NYC buy one and try and wangel the sales tax off as well and then bring it back on the flight Smile

Found out that the company im flying with offer shipping at a standard rate of £34 per bike!!

Feeling greedy and at the prices i've seen i may try and bring 2 back as the spare should easily sell for a heck of a lot more than what they charge for them stateside! good old exchange rate eh!! FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Bringing one back, customs will normally let it go, but bringing two might be considered pushing it .....

It's always a roll of the dice. One of my mates bought a set of golf clubs, but he bought the cheapest golf bag he could find on eBay to take out with him and throw away - but atleast his outbound ticket listed golf clubs so he could argue the toss.

I've not gone to such extremes and been lucky so far.

Problem is Joker they want me to pay the extra for it Sad I said why should i if you cant provide the bike when its needed?

They have said it may now be 3 weeks but they aren't sure how many have been pre-ordered by normal customers. Im guessing the customers who pay full price get the bikes first and the ins co get them last and as my size is the most common i think i'll be last on the list Sad

As soon as it arrives though it will be going straight into the spare room in its box and listed up for £420 delivered with invoice to someone, which will cover the costs of buying a US Spec, and the air freight there and back Smile

Though seriously looking at getting an upgraded one out there as parts are cheaper as well Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

United Kingdom 2007 Range Rover Supercharged Supercharged Java Black

I use cycleguard bike insurance as it covers crash damage, third party liability and accident insurance and other stuff. It's more pricey than the house insurance route, but covers more stuff and has no excess and a like for like replacement. I crashed into a walker who had walked past the "this is a one way cycle trail, no entry, no walkers, bikes will be coming down here at speed" signs and the insurance lawyers ensured the dopey Censored didn't take me to the cleaners for a personal injury claim (I got a couple of broken fingers and smashed up helmet and front forks, they got 6 broken ribs and a lot of cuts an grazes and a black eye).
