Towbars

Hi guys,

i need to get a towbar fitted to my FFRR 2012MY, however there seems to be a multitude of different prices in order get this done - ranging from £1300+vat from Landrover down to £400 inc vat from a 'towbars r us' type company.

Am I missing something or is there really such a wide spread on the pricing. Are the 'cheaper' prices low quality, likley to fail, only useful for attaching bike racks...or are they OK? I really don't know. I need it to be able to tow a Car transporter, so given the weight of this do I need a specific type?

Apologies for my naivety and if I have missed something obvious, but any input you could provide as the type of Towvbar and hopefully where to get one from (and fitted) would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks

A Non Land Rover Tow Bar may effect re-saleability if this matter to you.

You could always find out the make of the towbar fitted by Landrover and go and buy it and have it fitted elsewhere at a more sensible price than LR dealer.
Chances are they supply Westfalia.

Land Rover one is Westfalia. I had one fitted to my 2012 for about £650 including the programming of the car. Chances are the lower price versions rely on a generic module or wiring kit to operate trailer lights and may upset the other electronics. There is a lot of metal involved in the armature and bar. Fitting took about two hours from memory. 2019 D5 HSE Lux SDV6 Indus

Buy the Westfalia towbar from PF Jones: Whistle

http://www.pfjones.co.uk/range-rover-2005-detachable-tow-bar.html

Westfalia supply Land Rover, it's exactly the same as provided by a main dealer and the storage box for the detachable bar itself even has the Land Rover logo on it!

Then contact Dan @ Duckworths (site sponsor) for the geniune Landrover Electrics (less than £100) which are plug and play and whilst you are at it ask him to supply a genuine Land Rover Tow Ball cover which keeps everything OEM as the kit from PF Jones will come with a Westfalia Cover.

Then either fit it yourself or ask a nice local Indy to do it for you (I did mine myself) and then when all is done you just need to get the car coded for a towbar which you can either chat up your local dealer to enable or get someone with a faultmate to do it for you Whistle The electrics will all work without the coding but when you select reverse the parking sensors will still sound before coding Thumbs Up

Thats it all done, a full OEM kit for less than half the cost any main dealer would charge!

Here's mine:

i fitted a non OE one on mine and othe than the fact its not detachable easily(requires 2 big bolts to be removed) im more than happy with it. Towed a tintent about and have recovered numerous vehicles using it without a hitch. Electric module and plugs from dan plugged in and worked straight away included rear PDC being disabled. took me an evening to fit to make sure the bumper came off without breaking any luggs and went on the same way Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Coding for L322 Tow-Bar

Sorry to resurrect an old thread. I have actually PM'd Andy - but didn't realise how old the thread was!

I've used an indy specialist tow-bar installer who've seemingly done a very nice neat job (used them before, they were great then). I ordered the Westaflia & L/R loom and was charged accordingly.

When I collected the vehicle after the job, I specifically asked if they had coded it to ensure the reverse park sensors do not sound when towing and a woman in reception rather patronisingly said, "yes, when the 13pin plug is connected, no your vehicles' reverse parking sensors will not sound".

Guess what!?

So I took it back & they're now saying the L322 just does that. I didn't accept that and told'em so. Their Westfalia coding apparatus only does L405> and so they said when they checked (presumably with their supplier), that the L322 comes "pre-coded" and so doesn't need to be coded?

So, I have IID and the car is not coded for any tow-bar in there. So on the assumption that they indeed have installed what they say that have (i.e. the Land Rover loom & I think they have as they supply the L/R stowage bits) it could be that I just need to enable it myself and upload the CCF.

Can anyone indicate which option in IID it is to set please? There are a few options - I guess it's just the first one?

"Tow bar"
"Trailer module"
"Trailer stability assist"
"Trailer towing ball"

Thanks Thumbs Up

Fixed

Just to echo back that I coded the Tow-bar with IID and its worked 100%. Tow-bar installer was very happy (as was I).

I coded it as follows (mine was fitted with the genuine Land Rover loom / module):

BCM-Control Body / Tow-Bar: Set to "Trailer Tow Attachment"

BCM-Control Body / Trailer Module: (as mine was installed with 13 pin Euro connector) Set to: "Trailer module 13 - Position socket"

I've uploaded a screenshot on IID so as to show / help others in future Thumbs Up
