Supermarket fuel

I've noticed something curious about fuel consumption & wondered how forum members would view these observations.
I've recently bought a Mercedes 270 CDI for my work & like many cars these days it has a fuel consumption screen. The point is that when I buy fuel from a Supermarket the car returns about 42 mpg Neutral but if I buy fuel from our local BP or Shell outlet then the fuel consumption improves! The figures for the main retailers fuel is bang on 52mpg constantly Thumbs Up Very Happy
I’ve carefully noted this anomaly over the last month & can’t believe that this is just a strange coincidence.
Now the question must be how does this affect an L322? Shocked

I would never buy supermarket fuel and always use SHELL or BP is no SHELL garage nearby.

The difference is in the additives which Supermarkets do not use (as much)....

PS: It has also been said that some supermarkets buy the cheapest supply available including (in some cases) the bottom of the storage tanks....

Hmm, I mostly only ever get it from tesco.

Maybe I should start using BP and Shell round here and see if my Redex improved 27mpg goes up even more! Very Happy Discovery 4 HSE

I only use Shell and will not use supermarket fuel unless no other choice. I even once drove 3 miles away from Sainsbury's in Sterling to find a Shell garage.

At home, we have two Shell outlets nearby, so it makes sense. Si. <This is my name.

The cheapest, every time. Get me daily email from petrolprices.com and so I know where the cheap ones are. Mostly TOTAL and JET round here. Same price as Sainsburys.

I once convinced my father to break with tradition and fill his car up at the local BP garage instead of the Asda store he filled at every week...

He got enough fuel economy to cover the extra cost and more,

He has filled up the same way now for over a year and as he logs every penny spent and every mile he does... Over the year he has saved more and more as the consumption didn't drop hugely between services like it did the 4 years previously!

Proving that its not only the saving on that tank of fuel you gain, but the long term damage poor quality fuel can do...

In st Andrews here we have 2 stations, morrisons supermarket or Shell.. They are both the same price!! We always use shell as I THINK it is a better quality product..... But... I have been told that ALL the fuel in this area comes from Grangemouth refinery. So are they making different fuels for different customers?? Previously..

Yer different stuff is made for different customers. I make the stuff and the base fuel is all the same it's then the additives that get added for different markets. We supply a massive area from our refinery and sell to all customers so in essence you get the same stuff wherever you go. Shell/BP just put some extra bits in to make the gogo juice a bit better. [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

Rob... So do you have a different production line, so to speak, for shell/bp, or do you just add stuff to the base fuel before it goes into the tankers for delivery? And.... If you supply supermarkets, do they all get the same stuff then? Previously..

Without going to deep into it. We produce the same fuel which is then blended into batches. For instance V-Power has a different blend to the standard stuff, but vpower is special stuff. When the road tankers come in they select what there loading and then that's dropped into the tanker. The base fuel is all the same spec and depending who the customer is depends if they have extra additives etc. We supply Shell, BP, texaco, Tesco, Asda, sainsburys, anyone you could probably think off so to make individual grades for them all would be a production nightmare if they all wanted different grades etc. to put into context we hit a record not so long ago with 21million L leaving the site in one day! [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

Rob,

Could it then be how the fuel is stored? Cleanliness of tanks etc or is it a case of your refinery maybe works in a different/better manor than others?

There has been lots of issues (well publicised in the press) with moisture/water etc in Tesco and Asda fuels... At least in the south west area... With lots of payouts!

Come on Craig you don't really think asda and all really fill 10,000litre tanks with 100% fuel??

300litre of water in there is an extra £390/420 for doing nothing!!! Great way to boost profits every 2-3days. Just got to make sure you don't put too much in with the diesel or petrol and keep it mixed Wink
