Parking sensors

Hiya,

A question for all you knowledgeable people, if I may. Smile

When I bought it, my RR S/C had working rear sensors, but not so much as a squeak out of the front sensors. There was no long tone, no flashing button or anything like that. Just silence out of the front sensors and normal behaviour from the rears.

So when the car was in at LR having a bit of warranty work done, I asked them to check the sensors and repair them. This they did by replacing the sensor control module, and when I got the car back they said they were tested and working.

I got home and found that they weren't working. Every time I tried to enable them, I got the long tone and the flashing button. I tried again over a couple of days, still the same problem so I booked in the car with Rovertune for a look.

Fast forward to today, and as I was reversing off the drive to head down to Rovertune the rear sensors detected the other car on the drive. This was intriguing, so I drove forward towards the garage door. Yep, the fronts were working as well. I drove back and forth on the drive (no doubt leading to much curtain twitching), but the sensors kept working. I took the car in anyway, but then we decided I may as well rebook it for next week and see what happens in the interim.

So what I was wondering is - has anyone else had this problem, whereby the sensors stop working but then start working again all of their own accord? Can I expect them to stop working again?

Sorry to be thick, but my old car didn't have parking sensors so I'm not very au fait with how they operate. Smile

On my last FF the sensors had a mind of their own now and then. I'd get the long tone, sometimes it would go on and on and then peter out as if it were disappearing down a tunnel.

I would think there was a fault on the rears, but then, the next day, they worked. I never ended up getting anything replaced as it wasn't needed.

FFRR's do have their share of inexplicable gremlins which seem to come and go. Discovery 4 HSE

So this behaviour is normal, then... thanks guys! I've deliberately held off from posting a response for fear of jinxing the things and stopping them working again, but I had the car out again today and the sensors both front and rear were working fine all day. So clearly the RR Gremlins have been at work.

I've got the car booked in for Wednesday, but I'll ring and cancel! Sod's Law says the sensors will stop working again as soon as I have. Very Happy

Dampness doesn't seem to be the reason why they don't work - it was pretty wet yesterday yet they worked fine. I imagine their lack of response must just be a grumpy "FFS, do we have to do some work now..." after the front sensors have been non-operational for God knows how long.

Anyway! I shall stop faffing with them. If they stop working, I'll do something about it. Otherwise I won't. Mr. Green

Ill bet you there is a broken wire in the system that when going over the right bump at the right speed brings up the fault and visa versa...

If it happens again, switch on the ignition and the sensors then listen to each sensor (get your ear very close) and you should here a faint clicking noise... When you find the one thats not clicking, you have found the fault... Simply change that sensor with another one in the bumper (there all the same) and if the lack of clicking moves you know its the sensor... If it stays the same, you probably have the old broken wire syndrome (sensor wiring is very very thin and with age gets brittle and snaps) Find the brake and repair! Simples Whistle

Great - thanks Craig! I've seen references on here to listening for the clicking, but I didn't know what was meant and I didn't like to ask. But now you've explained it all, I can check the sensors for myself next time they stop working. Cheers. Thumbs Up

Also another easy check if they stop working if you have trailer electrics plug a trailer light board in and if the front sensors come on and work as they should you know if the problem is the front or back as the trailer light board switches the rear sensors off this is what happens with mine my sensors dont work normally just buzzing and flashing button but when i tow the fronts work perfect and the button is constant lit up but i know that one of the sensors is faulty at the rear as i had it checked onto no6 Range Rover
