My shiny new RR has got a cracked windscreen.

It's only a small crack and normally I'd just get it repaired, but it's got the heated windscreen and rain sensors and leather trip and all that gubbins, so I'm not sure it's that simple!

So what I want to know is - can the screen be repaired? And if not, is replacement a simple, straightforward task? I.e., will everything work on it afterwards? My insurers have appointed a company to do whichever job I choose, and the guy is bringing a new windscreen in case that's what I need.

I would rather have a new windscreen; but make sure it is OEM and make sure they take their time in fitting it indoors. I remember a friends car which developed more problems than it solved - some horrible wind noises are not uncommon on FFRRs either after a repair.

ETA: Is it a crack or a chip? If it is a chip it can be repaired. The rain sensor is at the top of the windscreen but the heated element will not work for that small section of screen if repaired.

Ah, now there's the problem - there is no indoors here that they can use. They're one of these mobile fitters. Not sure I like the idea of extra problems caused by the windscreen, just for a little crack.

It's definitely a crack - there's a tiny chip where the stone has hit the screen, and the crack has spread out on either side from the chip. I don't mind that bit of the heated screen not working - it's on the passenger side, over towards the tax disc, so well out of my immediate field of vision. Just as long as the most of heating element will work, I'll be happy.

That sound like just a bad chip you should be able to get it repaired by autoglass etc I have had a couple dine in the past with good results. Like EVO says you might just loose element in that bit. Pity you didnt see it when you bought the car and got dealer to sort it.

PS if he replaces it make sure he reconnects everything they left the rain sensor/ auto headlight module unplugged on mine Mine was a blue one!

The dealer swears it wasn't there when they did the PDI before the car was delivered. But he drove it across to my place FOC, so if it happened on that trip it would be mean of me to take him to task over it! Especially when a repair will cost me nothing anyway. I know it didn't happen while I've been driving, because I'd have noticed. There's a vague possibility that some muppet will have lobbed a rock at it, I suppose, but I can't see why they'd have done that - it's only been parked on the drive since I got it.

Ah well - one of those things! If it'd been on my side, I'd have noticed - but because it's right over on the nearside, I only happened to notice it yesterday when I was looking for something.

Thanks for the info on the reconnection - though I'm thinking that if he wants to replace the whole windscreen, I might just send him away and take it down to LR as long as my insurers agree to it. (Well hey, I can dream. )

Hi, I concur, if its a chip, a repair sounds like the better option. I has a similar issue a few weeks back and the repair took 30 minutes and is almost invisable. 0-60 takes 5 and a half seconds...and about 17 gallons of fuel....

I think the dealer will just send it Autoglass etc I dont think its somthing they do in house but I have seen a tread on here about how many screen options there are!!

Anyway hope it gets sorted and is the last of your problems  Mine was a blue one!

Auto glass vacuum repair works well, subject to crack size. It only takes 5 minutes.

I understand if it's anew car you'd want a new screen, but if it's not fitted correctly.....

Thanks guys, I feel much better now about just getting it repaired. I was just worried that a repair would stop the entire heated screen working. (Even if it might, please don't post to tell me that!!)

I'm just going through the car bit by bit every evening, and tonight's exploration took me through the boot. No removable towbar (didn't want one anyway, so that's no problem), no warning triangle, no toolkit. But there is a very nice spare with a new tyre on it, and most of a Panavise portable vice - but not the jaws, for some bizarre reason. And fortunately, the key for the locking wheel nuts is still there!

It's a good car, this. Normally I'm bored with exploring the various bits and pieces within a couple of days, but with this one I haven't finished exploring yet, so I certainly haven't had time to get bored with it.

I got a stone chip in mine & had the entire glass replaced.
The heater elements are most likely broken if the glass is cracked.
When I talked to the insurance company, I mentioned the heated glass.
We agreed there was no way for me to see if the heater wires were broken or not, so replacement was the solution.
Took the guy about 90 minutes in my driveway. It was a nice day, so he just did it outside.
$1300, covered 100% by insurance; which is not the same as "it didn't cost me anything". Jim

Well, this is my quandary. There's no way to tell now for several months whether the heating elements are still working or not. But then again, I don't much want the guy to end up damaging the leather trim or the electrics either.

I think on balance, I'll go for the repair if I can. (The crack may be too big for that...) If the electrics don't work - well, I've only just bought the car and my last car didn't even have a heated windscreen, so I can live with having to scrape the thing clean on icy mornings. The only problem being that I can't reach the top of the RR windscreen.

Turn the elements on and wait for a min or two, then you can feel which areas of the screen are warm and which are cool.

Oh. I never thought of that. I guess I should do this before I let the repairman leave??

Put a cup of coffee on the dash near the crack/chip and wait for it to steam up then put the screen on and it will be obvious if it works then
