getting away without a torque wrench

Hi folks,

I'm going to change my rocker cover gaskets today, and do not have a torque wrench . The torques specified in the rave are very low...of the top of my head, in the region of 10ft lbs.

What is the general concensus? Do I needa torque tlwrench ? Or will I get away using a 1/4'' ratchet and going easy ?

All depends how used to spannering you are!

Some things need a torque wrench - heads for example - but most things it's a matter of experience and being careful - don't use a really long spanner on low torque fasteners...

Wouldn't normally use a torque for the rocker cover just tighten then give it a jag up only use a torque for the head that's my experience anyway but others may disagree

If you intend doing more DIY maintenance then buy the wrench, I bought one just to torque up my wheel nuts. Most of my life I've done workarounds/bodges due to not having the right tools - I now realise it was a mistake Very Happy

If not the guys are right small spanner and just nip it up - don't over tighten. Geoff

There is a proper torque scale for people without a torque wrench...

Half a grunt - nipped up
one grunt - nice and tight
two grunts - jolly tight
two grunts and a fart - wheel nuts
three grunts, a fart and follow through - snapped off inaccessible bolt.

This question gets asked a lot on another forum I use. As has been said, some areas, cylinder head, mains etc must be tightenend sequentially with a torque wrench. Most others I always think you are better doing by hand to gain and develop your feel for whats right.

I admit to not having changed an FFRR rocker cover gasket, but all the others I've done you need to be very careful with. Overtightening will almost always lead to the gasket being deformed and leaking. Many of the best quality rocker gaskets have a steel spacer built in around each bolt hole to prevent this. I like to use a very light smear of sealant on either side as the gasket as well to seal and hold it in place whilst you are tightening. Smile Lloyd Barnes

Cheers for reply folks. I changed the rocker covers and rubber washers last week. I even managed to loose one of the nuts and had to get one from land rover for the princely sum of 3.85... I'm watching both closely now to check the leaks have gone. MY2010 TDV8 Vogue Ipanema Sand
