Mine did that from new - gearbox died at about 48,000 miles - about the time it *should* have had a flush if it wasn't supposedly *sealed* for life..... |

If you take it to a specialist, they'll be able to update the software for you, however be warned, I got mine done, and immediately afterwards needed a gearbox rebuild.

Sal if anything, take it to a Land Rover dealer/tech who can re-flash the gearbox software. If the oil is changed on a SC gearbox then it can lead to preload issues from the transfer box. Never get the oil changed and adaptions reset as it often causes premature failure... Lots of technical stuff im afraid!

Presumably the same would apply to the 4.4 also as they use the same gearbox? (Facelift I mean) Just checked, the 3.6tdv8 is the same gearbox too, do they honestly not recommend changing the oil at all in these boxes?!? Last edited by Katash on 8th Mar 2012 11:47am. Edited 2 times in total |

Hi Craig, I'm sure you'll correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it the case that in order to reflash the software, the adaptations have to be reset prior to installing the new software? That's certainly what my Land Rover Specialist told me, and seemed to be confirmed by a technical bulletin I read from Land Rover! Also what you're saying about not changing oil would seem to be the opposite to the conventional wisdom on the forum, most people recommend a fluid change, since it can't cause a problem by using fresh oil, it can of course highlight an existing problem, if your gears are already so mashed that it's only the sludge of oil oil full of ground metal which keeps it going. I did find a technical bulletin from ZF on this gearbox, with a troubleshooting guide, which basically gave a list of symptoms, and what to do. For most of them the first step was to check fluid level, then replace fluid, for some they recommended software, but as an essential step before beginning the software reflash the adaptations must be reset apparently. Be interesting if Land Rover are telling you not to replace oil, whilst ZF are recommending it should be replaced! Wouldn't entirely surprise me though! Could you post it for all to see? P.S. Good thread here from the other forum, where RR Phil posts the ZF advice on changing tranny oil every 100K on this gearbox! http://www.rangerovers.net/forum/6-range-r...rever.html Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining! |
