Private registration....

Quick question, are you actually allowed to split registration lettering up like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CHRIS-Private-Nu...wt_1037???

I thought there was something on the DVLA site saying you can't but these guys are selling plates based on that format.....

Offically No, but lots of people do.

The law states that:
You must not alter, rearrange or misrepresent the letters or numbers
Characters must not be moved from one group to the other (e.g. A242 ABC must not be displayed as A242A BC).
That means:
No stylised letters
Do not move the space around
Do not misrepresent letters / numbers using screws or fixings
Do not misrepresent letters / numbers using squashed or distorted letters
No images other than the approved flags (no football emblems, etc)
Full details of the requirements are included in The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001 Reformed

i think you can get a way with to a degree, but if you start messing with the letters ..i.e making S look like 5's and putting bolts in the middle of 11 to look like a H then you will get a tug, V8 facelift Range Rover Autobiography 22" wheels.

I've got a plate which i've had for a while now which was based around my year of birth and initials, when i bought the FFRR i wanted to move the groupings from V80 XXX to V8 0XXX but no where would do it due to having to put their stamp on the plates these days and didn't want to be associated with it if i got pulled Confused

Its easy enough to get it made up "unofficially", there are plenty of sites on line (and shops on ebay) that will make the plates, its just not strictly legal. (Normally, they advertise as Show Plates)

As Daveo said, a little bit of moving and you would probably be ok, its when people really start tweaking letters and numbers I think the Police would have a chat with you Wink Reformed

I have always felt that if you buy a plate and then have to move stuff around and generally frigg it a bit to get some spurious message or word across the you deserve to be pointed and laughs at as well as have the DVLA take the plate off you despite what you may have paid . Just a personal opinion of course Very Happy 2008 MY Supercharged

I have a plate on one of my other cars. Technically it's not legal, but what I've done is reduced the gap slightly between the groups (ie between "A123" and "BCD") but the gap is still larger than between the characters of a group (if that makes any sense at all!). It's been on there a fair few years, albeit limited mileage/use, and never had a problem......yet!

I think you are also supposed to have the plate maker's logo at the bottom - to what extent that's a legal requirement vs what year the plate was made/added, I don't know?

Here it is:

Not being funny but why? C8PPO with or without a space means nothing to anyone. Why take a chance with having an illegal plate. No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

Number plates are now part of the MOT and any deviation from the prescribed format is a fail.
