Towbar electrics choice ?

So I've just fitted an armature, bought a drop plate removeable towball from eBay and am now looking at electrics.......and I know there have been a lot of posts on this before...

I am unsure whether to buy the twin 7 pin or the 13 pin electrics (I don't have anything specific to tow yet)

There is quite a price variation - on eBay just now, I can get the 13 pin dedicated Westfalia for £80 for everything, whereas the same company are selling the 7 pin kit for £140

The other option I've seen is genuine LR twin 7 wiring for £110.00 but then you still need the tow ECU at £65.00 so £170 all in.

So it looks like the Westfalia 13 pin kit for £80 seems the deal to go for (it says it comes with the module)

What electrics do you guys with towbars have ??? and your thoughts ?? Stolen / Gone: 2006MY Supercharged LPG Autobiography - Zambezi Silver with Sand/Jet/Jet Oxford Leather.....

Genuine oem westfalia @ £80 is the way. You can buy a simple connector to convert from 13 to 7 to cover all eventualities.

i bought a cheap genuine L/R 12 S&N set from ebay which included the towing module. this makes fitting really straight forward.

then an hour with a soldering iron and some heat shrink and it's converted to 13 pin. Current: TDV8 (3.6) RRS HSE

I'm in danger of asking a stupid Q here but why do you need an ECU if you go the 7 pin route but not with the 13 pin route?

Westfalia 13 for me too - plus the 7-pin adaptor, works a treat.

I have 13 pin genine landrover electrics fitted by tow bar fitter and sourced by me with a westfalia detachable bar, works great but a little bit pricier. Total plug and play to fit.

Aparently it needs programming as well. Got it done for 20 notes at a local indy.

13 pin is the way to go much neater solution and better connection imho. and you can get converters for all eventualities. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Sorry for bringing up an old thread!

Did you go with the Westfalia 13 pin electrics? Were they plug n play ones?

I need to get some for mine.

Thanks 2009 TDV8 Vogue SE - Bonatti Grey

I would go with the 13pin and get the adaptor for 7 pin.

I too am ready to order.....I assumed the westfalia one is plug and play as I hear it's what LR fit as standard ? Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........
