how to dismantle the 06 to 09 headlamp | |
OK, here is my guide to taking apart the 06 to 09 head lamp, you don't need many tools, a heat gun, small flat blade screw driver and a large flat bladed screw driver.i have repaired several lights, the chrome ring being very common to come of inside,
first get your self a nice blanket to rest the light on, they scratch easily if face down and you start spinning it around.
this is a head light from an 09,its adaptive and has cornering lamp as well.

now on to the heating up of the sealent, this is a heat gun so dont get to close, just keep going around the edge and the lamp will soon warm up,
in this photo is the starting point

keep heating around the lip and then with your big flat head start to apply small amout of pressure while you keep the heat going, the glass will start to move, keep the heat on around the lip, the glass will start to lift
 | Click image to enlarge |
at this point i put some form of wedge and remove the heat

as the sealant cools you can cut any stringy bits and mold it back to the edge, a small bowl of soapy water for dipping your fingers in will stop you getting it stuck to you fingers.
start with the heat again and lift the glass more, keep the sealant under control as you go, don't be tempted to take it of in one go as you will have fine strings of sealant all over the light and it will end up as finger prints where you don't want it.

after the sealent has cooled down run round the edge and tidy up the sealant before you remove the front trim
