On the peat moor above Helensburgh with my old Rangie.
It looked OK but I found grassed-over drain. Rolling Eyes

This one wasn't me, I saw it by the main road on the way into Stornoway when they were digging foundations for a house.

A couple of good posts about the dangers of winches here. I am a trained fires service winch instructor and I am scared silly when I see some cars fitted with winches knowing that the owners are probably not trained.

If used correctly no winch rope/cable should never snap. Every winch should have a maximum torque and if the cable is rated over that pull it should never break. Failure is usually when the anchor point is not up to scratch or when the cabe is not maintained correctly. Any shackles used should be rated over the maximum torque/pull of the winch too.

Basic safety training should be essential before anyone can use a wich, although that will never happen sadly. No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

I definately agree that if you've never got stuck, then you aren't trying hard enough Thumbs Up

No piccies of my best stuck moments, but does a failed hill climb count ?

A real lesson for me that locked diffs can sometimes get you into more trouble than not having them. I was lucky, but the guy who went after me & decided that it just needed a bit more speed Twisted Evil ......

Needless to say, I went to play on a different part of the site after that

What I do is engage reverse & roll back down - feet off everything - is that what you were asking ?

What I meant was that without locked diffs, I wouldn't have got as far up the hill and therefore not into trouble in the first place.......

Yep thats the one. Just many people don't realise engine braking works in reverse aswell as in 1st low

Also on newer models hill decent also works in reverse

As above, low range, hdc, reverse or 1st depending on which wnnof the vehicle is facing downhill Smile

Hdc speed also change between low and high range too, I guess so as obtuse engine braking. This is irrespective of being in a gear or neutral FYI Wink FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Also I think its on the my05 onwards, mabee later not sure, but you can adjust the hdc speed using the cruise control up/down function

The one and only time I've ever been 'stuck' is on a greenlaning trip in my 110 five years ago.

Just exited a wet, steep grassy field after a slippery climb and nonchantly drove into a 'puddle', which turned out to be a bit deeper than first thought. A Series 3 109 had just walked it, so I figured I'd be fine...

Wrong line and down one front wheel went, leaving the diagonally opposite rear waggling in the air.

As help was arriving, I then realised I'd not selected diff-lock, so tried that and out I trundled.

Either through some kind of driver skill (me?!) and / or decent tyres, I've never been stuck since. Si. <This is my name.

I eat rat poison.
