Bought a L322 with a goosed TD6 , bought a M57 engine out of a X5 , got it fitted and



Initially it had a lot of crankcase pressure but changing the breather cured most of it but it had a dink dink dink that got much louder under load

So I appear to have replaced a knackered engine with a really knackered one

Plug it and get your codes read, you never know it might not be terminal, but then again..

No waning lights on , revs right up to the red line, on tickover it doesn't sound too bad , thing is if you look on eBay there's dozens for sale but few sold listings so it could have stood with no oil in for years

The seller is as surprised as me, has over 4000 feedback on eBay , it was taken out by undoing every nut, water pipe and loom connector so I didn't think for a minute it wasn't good

We're discussing what to do about it

Sounds very much like the top end. Have you had the cam covers off to look at it? John

I've used the mechanic that fitted it for over 10 years, he has a lot of experience with diesel engines, he's telling me because it's running on 6 cylinders and revs to the red line he thinks it's the little end because it's too loud to be a stuck tappet problem.

I can only go on what he's saying, the old engine smoked like a steam train, this one still smokes but he thinks it's all in the exhaust.

he's saying he could spend another £100 getting the rocker cover off for a look to see what the problem is but it may still be terminal

The guy I got the engine from has over 4000 100%+ on ebay and is as off as me about it because he thought it was fine as he collected the car and it drove in OK , the problem may be related to how long it's been standing with no oil in it ready to be sold.

He is going to give me my money back but that doesn't help with the labour costs

Money for labour , fat chance of that , at least he's holding his hands up over the engine.

I found a M57 forum somewhere in Europe on faceache , they're telling me to get the injectors tested as it could be an injector problem , I've never heard an engine sound like that without it being something major causing it , could it knock that loudly from an injector issue

The only time I've ever herd anything like that was under extreme load on a very hot engine... so it could be an injector running weak... hopefully you still have 6 spares! Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Spares of everything, 2 complete engines, I think it needs further investigation before I spend £600 on another engine plus the same on fitting .

When the injector o rings went in my D2 TD5 it sounded very similar.

Understand the Discovery was an LR lump and the L322 is a BMW unit.

What does the oil smell like in the replacement engine?

Picked another engine up today only I've seen this one running and I've bought it with the injectors still in it , decided it was going to be cheaper in the long run just to write it off and start again rather than try chasing faults down at £££ an hour

New engine fitted , got the call today, come and get it, running fine

got to decide whether I can be bothered to make the 150 mile round trip to take the old engine back or just sell the working bits on ebay

The main thing is you're back on the road  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!
