I've really just started using the ff this week and today decided to try the low range..put car into neutral and flicked the switch..car let out a woosh for a split second and low range symbols on dash...quite happy with myself I try to put it back into high range..everytime I flick switch the icon on the dash flashes and it stays in low range..eventually it decides to go back high range after 6 trys .. I'm cautious to try that again!

Any ideas what could have caused this? I have a fault on the transfer box and the I carsoft cant read it..could this have been a fault caused by using the low range? Cleared it and it hasn't returned.

My guess would be the motor that drives the range change on the xfer box.

If it has (nearly) always been left in high range, then it can struggle with changing back to high as the contact armatures wear holes in the contact surface.

If you do a thread search, there is an easy fix for this (bend the contacts slightly) and the assembly is fairly easy to remove from the xfer box.

Thanks for reply.. Yeah past owner only ever used it for motorway driving and it has never been off road...Ive got plans to get it muddy so I'm definetly needing to sort it out

I have to say, I put mine in low range just to go up and down our (steep and long) drive every couple of months - it's not needed, but I figure it helps to turn it over every now and then

As said above the problems are down to a ring shaped rheostat in the shift motor. There is a thread on here about it but I can't find it at the moment....

Seems to be a free fix, which is doable if somewhat fiddly and has potential to knacker the potentiometer. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I'm going to have to get mine taken off and have it bench tested...will have to make it a priority as I'm heading up north for xmas and the low range will be of great use...also panicking incase it gets stuck in low range ..will do a search for a company that will refurbish my old unit...im sure I've read a post in here about it...

The problem is the potentiometers are the part which fails and these seem to be specific to this unit and No one has successfully found a replacement afaik. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Cheers..its the same lot I've linked..definite priority now...has anybody replaced their own? Looks easy enough ! Getting the thing back on looks a bit tricky though! I'm loving working on my ff just now but this is out my comfort zone a wee bit

i think it is in rave and also on youtube, you have to careful about how you remove as there is a part that can be moved either in or out when the motor is removed which will get the transmission confused and if you push it in you cant get it back out without removing the transfer box....
there is a nut turns the lead screw and pulls and pushes the selector ring, i have some photos that i'll dig out.
it is very straightforward if you do it correctly
