ffrr's not well at all

Just done 2 runs to Battle in Sussex from Walton on Thames (Heathrow), towing 2.5 ton trailers. The first run was a ok, and i managed to fly back to get the other one. On setting off on the second run the engine was reluctant to start, would say that it turned over 5-6 times before it fired, normally 2 times when cold. It did the long climb up past Leatherhead ok and managed to get up the hill going to Tonbridge. But at the top as it leveled out it started to vibrate a bit, torque converter I thinks, coast down the hill and have some lunch in the layby, no problems. But when I tried to start it again after 15 minutes, it just would not fire up, in the end I beat it into life with the loud peddle, and it coughed in to life.

From that point on it has been a pig, missing form 1000 - 2100 rpm, and generally feeling like the wheels were square , but the strange thing is if you have to put your foot down it it just goes about it's business without any fuss. I limped it all the way from Tonbridge (North side, just before the road works ) to Battle, with the trailer, and then I managed to get from Battle all the way back to Milton Keynes on less than a 1/4 tank, at the time I had the A/C OFF, Heating on Full and all the windows open. At one point I even managed to get the temp gauge to drop But it didn't seem to improve the engine at all, so I sweated my 's off for nothing

The last couple of miles of my journey I did put the boot in to see if it would clear... No... D'OH! But I can report that it goes when it wants to.

On getting home I did go around the car to see if any thing was obvious, and I did find a whining noise at the back, was loudest at the rear, and I couldn't hear anything in front of the rear wheels. However I find it was a wee bit louder if you stuck your ear to the open filler

Right, so what's wrong ? Pig to start, not happy at low revs or gentle driving, but fine when you put the boot in. Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Sounds like a sticky injector to me, it should throw a fault up, could also be the injector wiring loom too.

It's a good place to start in any case.

The other option is a failing in tank fuel pump, which could lead to a fuel starvation, though as you say it goes if you stab it, it may be less likely? There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Inline fuel pump? Or leaky injector.

That's what has foxed me, if the pump was Fubar'd not only would it be a pig to start, but the higher the revs of the engine the worse it will miss. mine is doing the oppersite.

RE injector fault, will it put up an engine management light, or the screen of doom. Only I drove it all the home expecting Bong and your screwed , but strangely it it stayed silent I suppose that an injector might be on it's way out, and the hotter it gets the more it plays up Beats me, and I could do with it fixing quick, as I'm turning work away and that's not good for either mine or the ffrr's prospects  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Wouldn't necessarily throw an engine light or bong, when my 530 needed a new set of injectors there was no warning lights, (same engine) needed plugging in to diagnose.

See if you can get t plugged in, will give a much better pointer as to the problem. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Check the inline fuel pump, mine had similar symptoms after not starting. had to give the pump a light tap to get it going tho. the noise was coming from the real left also and the accelerating issue was similar. Sounds strange I know, I put my failure (happened twice in a few months) to a slightly blocked fuel filter that was causing the extra strain on the pumps. I ended up replacing with a high quality bosch pump from another vehicle.
No issues since

Up Date........... following lots of useful advice on possible issues, I decided to put the car in to a garage for a reading, not because I don't think that I have been given duff advice, more like there are so many issues that can cause this type of failure. And it could get very expensive very quickly

The first Indy that I approached said it would be £100+vat for the diagnostic, reasonable (ish), but they couldn't do it until Monday p.m., not so good. So I phoned around trying to get faster diagnostics or a better price, and I'm pleased to say I have managed both

The second garage that I spoke to said that they would plug the car in during the day F.O.C. The very, very nice man then went on to the faults that I had, and very quickly asked if the fuel filter had been changed with in the last 18 months? That threw me, only had the beast for a year, and I haven't changed the filter. He then went on to say that because the government is putting a bit of Bio fuel in with the normal to meet their Green legislation, he has found that Landrover fuel filters clog up and cause lots of problems with error codes. Bloody Government, why can't they just leave things alone So he is now going to do a reading and change the fuel filter at the same time, then I will know where I stand, hopefully it wont be too painful, but I don't for one minute think that Lady Luck will be shining on me

Oh and I will give you the name of the very, very nice garage, after they have done my car, wouldn't want to have to wait for your cars to be read  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Up date no 2.......

Got the ffrr back from the very, very nice garage, they replaced the fuel filter and cleared all the codes. They put the car on 2 readers, just to be certain, and neither one threw up any ecu issues for the running and starting of the engine, and said to me that if it's still playing up then it's injector leak back test time.

So I took it for a long run, trying to emulate the conditions from last week, which was very hard as I didn't have a trailer. And the car didn't feel 100% happy. So I parked it and left it for 20 minutes, and then tried to start it......... not a happy car at all. It did start, eventually, but it took an eternity to fire in to life. So I decided that enough was enough, and I have pulled all the injectors, and I'm having them cleaned and tested by a Bosch Main Agent.

Now it would appear that I'm not the first person to remove the injectors on the car, as some of them had been engraved, (common practice from the used parts sector). Also the inlet manifold gaskets are showing signs of not being in their prime, and there were 3 nuts missing from under the rubber bungs So on top of every thing else it looks like I was loosing boost / leaking air at the manifold face.

Oh forgot to say, the very, very nice garage is Woburn 4x4 Centre, top men, and are the people to talk to if your timing belts on the TDV8 need doing, they don't remove the engine or the body, so they are way cheaper than the others  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

At least you managed to get the injectors out, they can be problematic on the Bmw engine

Mass air flow meter has been suggested by my buddy who's a grease monkey for the Royalmail, he had very similar issues with his BMW 530 Touring, and that turned out to be the mass air flow meter. At the moment I'm waiting to get the injectors back, and hoping that 50%+ are OK !

Without swapping out a load of parts there is no real way to pin point the problem, so I've gone for the most obvious, and I will progress on to the lesser parts if that doesn't work. I'm no diesel expert, I cut my teeth on petrol engines, but I'm hopeful that it might be 1 / 2 iffy injectors and the air leeks on the manifold that are causing the issues. God knows if that were a petrol engine it would be popping and farting all over the rev range, the manifold joint was horrible (under statement of the week) Plus there were 4 out of 7 nuts missing, doesn't inspire me with confidence  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

The missing manifold nuts ......... Simples I think,WRONG M7 Who in there right minds uses M7 nuts? BMW apparently

Well I did the usual wonder web parts places, and all were + 1 or + 2 day delivery , so they are getting them from JLR. Local LR will get them but 2 days and payment up front , and they wont do card over phone , and they are 6 miles away , and I have the car in bits , and they really don't want to sell me the parts . They are soooo unhelpful that I wonder WHY I use them at all, then I remember only in very, very desperate cases.

Wonder if BMW will help, called them, yes they can get them , no they don't do cards over the phone , but I can pay when I pick them up THIS AFTER NOON This is a service that I have not experienced, since ditching Toyota I really think that JLR need to pull their socks up , and their under pants , cos they have just had a proper spanking from BMW .

So I have ordered 10 of the little blighters so that I can throw them about without a care in the world

Oh and to rub salt in to the wound, they were also cheaper, than the on line parts boys bar 1, I didn't ask LR for a price.... I wasn't in the mood for uncontrollable laughter....... There are times when the after sales service, leaves you feeling that all they care about is your money, and not the service  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Good News Everybody

2 of my injectors are fubar'd

Yes I am happy that 1 is totally fubar'd and the other is leaking so bad there was more going to the tank than the engine They will hopefully be repaired tomorrow and on their way back to me.

I was getting worried that there might be something really up with the engine, but 2 naff injectors and some really iffy seals on the inlet manifold should explain all the issues I have been having  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!
