TD6_Billowing white smoke_help?

Hi,

Just had to recreate my login? but hey ho..

So, I've just parked up at home after at home after hearing a loud 'wooshing' noise under hard acceleration, followed pretty much immediately by lots of white smoke out of the exhausts.

I parked up, popped the bonnet to have a 'look' Couldn't see any immediate leaks, or anything unusual. Restarting the engine led to white smoke pouring out of the exhausts.

I drove home slowly (luckily had only gone about a mile) - lots of white smoke under acceleration, no increase in temp, engine 'sounded' fine. Seemed to drive fine - no loss of power.

Since then, i've checked the oil filler cap - no white sludge/ gunk and the coolant is full. Plenty of oil in the engine.

I'm hoping its not the head and think it might be the Turbo/ intercooler hoses?

The exhaust fumes smell of oil/burning.

Any ideas? Anything I can check/ do to get a better idea of what it is before It goes to my local indy.

Hi Matricks, TDV6? It must be an L405 then? Is it still covered by the manufacturers warranty?

If you heard the noise you suggest I'd suspect a hose / intercooler.

Some experts will be along soon I'm sure - Good Luck

If it is a TDV6 405, then i would sit tight and call LR assist.

Otherwise as RiccartonRR has suggested have a check of the turbo hoses as a starter for 10. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammerðŸ˜œðŸ˜œ

Not heard of an intercooler failing, after all it is an air to air cooler, running at relatively low pressure, so unlikely to hole due to corrosion.

a quick search suggested it could be the crank case breather, these are known to block and can result in symptoms you describe. There is an updated vortex type which can be fitted as a replacement. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammerðŸ˜œðŸ˜œ

Thanks mate,

Perhaps a split hose then? (optimistic)

Was thinking if the Turbo had blown the drive would be really sluggish/ slow? Admittedly I wasn't driving 'normally' on the way home but didn't notice any loss in power when uphill/ pulling away.

I'll check the engine oil/ coolant again tomorrow and look for leaks anywhere?

edit to above. could be the crank breather, loads of folks have swapped them out for the BMW vortex version, its a straight swap.

I think this may be the part you need, if this is the problem........

Not sure TBH, but I'm sure one of the knowledgable TD6 owners will be along at some point to help out. The have all gone to bed early with a cocoa........or to the pub There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammerðŸ˜œðŸ˜œ

Hi. Pete haylands wrote on a thread a while ago, stating white smoke could be a sign of vacuum leak from servo into vacuum system, hence brake fluid burning off. I'm sure that he will correct me if I'm wrong.
Thought it was a good diagnosis so I wrote it down.

Check the radiator coolant for oil on top. I thought white exhaust meant water getting burnt. Which means head gasket or cracked head. Of these two I'd bet the first as hadn't heard of a head cracking. ______________________________

Turbo gone, or crankcase breather blocked.

Breather is the cheaper option...

Thanks for all the advice/ pointers - far more useful than another RR Forum I posted on.

So, I get the RR back tomorrow.

Fault = blown turbo + oil dumped into the exhaust.

Fix = new turbo, new crank case breather, oil filter and oil. (The latter 2 at my request)

£ = 987. The garage (RHunt 4x4) kindly got his supplier to price match the online price for a new Garrett and saved me about £400.
