Have recently fitted a Westfalia armature & farmers hitch (after reading many stories of the "detachable ones- detaching) with pin & clip.

Tighten the retaining bolt to the correct torque which will pull the sides of the socket in a little and remove any play. I had the same thing and when I checked the torque figure it resulted in almost a superhuman effort to get it tight enough. All quiet after that. |

The threaded one is the quietest, but clearly the more painful to remove -

Not really, you wouldn't be too bothered about it with a rattly old cattle trailer on the back. It's still more serene than a Defender with an adjustable drop plate on it. Wrap a bit of gaffer tape around the end of it before you jamb it in, that should be enough to take the slack out. |

Or get the removable ball and socket set. Which fit into the same hole in the armature. |

Alistair - Great pics. I've googled to try to find a threaded version for sale but come up short. Perhaps I'll give Westfalia a ring.

The removable ones are also ugly, as you only remove half of it. They leave a big lump sticking out underneath. |

Actually if you wanted to leave it in there permanently, you could just slather the thing in silicone sealant and push it in, before doing the same with the pin. I would imagine that'll do it. |

Took mine off today I didn't realise how much noise it made rattling about. Maybe that's why it's so easy to take off when not in use, I might do it more often |

Never read anything about them detaching personally. |

Ahh, yes. The disco tow bar is completely different in design to the one on the ff. to be honest knowing how they work I can't see how either could fail if properly engaged.

Do none of these people use the break away cable? Or do they just loop it around the tow ball..... I would expect the Disco one is the same as the Range Rover Sport, so i suspect that's where the rumour about "Range Rover tow bars" dropping off is from. I expect those that have failed are down to abuse, poor maintenance or just plain user error. The same reasons trailers sometimes jump off of tow balls on various cars. It doesn't mean the tow ball is fundamentally flawed. The quick release one is still ugly. The quick release is probably more secure in terms of theft prevention, as it locks onto the car. Whereas the farmers one with the pin needs a lump of chain and a padlock to stop someone just pulling up with another range rover and taking the complete hitch and trailer with them.... |
