this is from the 2006-2009 WM but it might give you an idea..[couldnt find anything in your year WM]

Break pad wear indicator lead, clips into a groove on the pads, seems to have been left off.......

 There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

As today was such a lovely I thought sod it let's replace the rear brake pad west sensor after work.
So I did.
Now this is the interesting bit. After replacing the sensor and lead I put a meter across the old one and I metered ok, by that I mean the circuit was complete across both pins. So why did the new one work and the old one fail, admittedly I didn't test the the new one to see what it read on the meter.
