TD6 '02 - New Rad, Tank, and EGR Thermal Valve

Fed up with topping up every week, stupid coolant level alert at +76mph, car taking an age to warm up (?) and needle dropping when going down hill, so some new parts fitted this morning. Replacing what I believe to be original parts at 141,585 miles.

Rad purchased from Advanced Factors, looked good, but was missing a drain valve, which will prove a bit messy next time I have to drain down?

Coolant tank & sensor, EGR valve (PEL000070) from Duckworths Dan.

Rad removal fairly routine, with the tricky bits being the removal of the vicious fan and shroud, and the locking caps at the top of the rad (just not done them before), one of those force the rad rearwards as far as you can jobs, hoping you don't break something. Coolant tank was easy peasy. Found nothing wrong with the tank, so could have just replaced the sensor (PCJ000020), unless it was all gunged up inside.

Old rad in a right old state, all covered in muck and impaled with a white interior fixing of some kind ?

Might be a service recommendation to remove rad every 40K or so to clean up all the muck that gathers there

Plenty of muck underneath the rad too. Cleaned all this up and gave each of the water connections a good wipe out too.

Was replacing the EGR thermal valve so needed to release the EGR cooler (the shiny metal bit) it was fixed to, in order to get at the inner bolt. Also kept an eye out for the O ring so as not to lose it. Refit new one and tighten everything up.

New rad slipped into place no problem and all connections fitted back on. They always feel far too loose for my liking!

Note no drain valve

Final thing with rad was holes at top did not line up, so had to drill out pilot holes and use a couple of self tappers to hold in place at top. No big deal.

Decided to give things a go WITHOUT refitting the viscous fan what with winter coming on, but as you can see I refitted the shroud just to help protect the new radiator. Remember to reclip the transmission cooler hose to the shroud.

Refilled with 50/50 coolant, started up and bled the turn screws on the EGR thermal valve, coolant rail and coolant tank. Brought car up to temperature and topped up the tank. Checked carefully for leaks, none to be seen.

Of interest, and it had me worried for a while, the bottom hose stayed cold for ages, long after the needle hit the middle, thought that my thermostat might be stuck closed, but then a final check on the hose and ouch! that is hot! All well. I tried to check engine temperature with the IIDTool, but couldn't find a live value - where is it?

Eventually the fiddle of refitting the engine covers and the undertray (why so many bolts ?)

Gentle mornings work Smile .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember Wink
